A colleague or mine did the Niagara try a tri this summer. She was nervous but especially dreading the run as it has always been difficult for her. On race day, she pushed through the swim and bike but when she got to the run, she was pouched. She ran out of the transition area and then stopped and walked. She said out loud to herself, "I can't do this." Unknown to her, there was someone right behind her who heard. The competitor stopped running and walked with her. She told her that she would not leave, that they were going to finish it together, that she would not let her give up. My friend argued for a while and finally promised her unknown buddy that she would finish the race but she didn't want to be responsible for her buddy getting a slow time. With that, the buddy took off and my friend, with the promise as inspiration, pulled back into a run and finished strong. She never saw the woman who stopped to help her again but it touched her heart deeply to have a competitor willing to make that kind of sacrifice for someone who she didn't know. If you are that person and happen to be reading this, thank you. It was a huge deal for my friend.

What a awesome story.  Awesome that someone heard your friend and stopped to help her, and awesome that your friend was able to finish strong despite having been ready to give up.  Thanks for sharing and huge congrats to your friend!!

Great story~  all around.  The stranger supporting your friend and your friend pulling her stuff together to finish the race well.  Stories like these make me love this sport more.

Plot twist. The other lady never actually existed and it was just your friend's alter ego!

One of the best.

Read "Once a Runner" first so you know the characters.

Two of my favorite books of all time. In fact, it may be time to dig them out again.....

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.

I started the Beginner Triathlete training program in earnest after Chinese New Year. I viewed the distances in the peak week with trepidation - how on earth would I manage it?
