Master 2759 Los Angeles, CA | Subject: Which shoes to wear for upcoming marathon? Hello everyone! I have about 340 miles on my current pair of Brooks Adrenaline GTS 13s and by the time race day comes I will have put in around 430 miles on them. I think around that point the shoes may be at or near the end of it's good use. I have another brand new pair of these shoes. Should I start breaking these in now and use them for race day or should I start using these to minimize mileage put on my current ones and use those instead? Please let me know what you guys think. This is going to be my first full marathon and it happens on October 12th. Thanks! Roland |

I usually have about 300 miles on my Brooks before I change them out, I personally can't imagine going 430 miles in a pair of shoes. My suggestion is to start working in your new shoes so that when you decide to use them exclusively, then they are already broken in. I have made the mistake of getting new shoes and not broken them in time for a big event and my feet blistered up! |

Champion 5345 Carlsbad, California | Subject: RE: Which shoes to wear for upcoming marathon? New ones for sure. Modern running shoes do not need to be "Broken In" and at least in my experience, new shoes on race day will be a welcome thing. This of course assumes you are already accustomed to the brand/model of the new shoes AND that the manufacturer has not JUST issued a new version that might not be the same. I decided to play it safe a while ago and purchase a pair of shoes at the beginning of the season JUST for racing. By the end of the season, they will have 100-150 miles on them so they get moved into the training rotation and replaced with a new pair of racers. |

Pro 5361 | Subject: RE: Which shoes to wear for upcoming marathon? At that mileage- your adrenaline's are shot, or pretty close to it. Get a new pair before race day, without a doubt. My guess is that you won't need much, if any break-in. Get a couple of short runs and one long run in them, and you'll be fine. They're really comfy shoes. Sample of one: I'm a 135lb, flat footed pronator, mid foot striker with a high cadence. I just compared my 385mi Adrenalines with a new pair, and I couldn't believe how shot the support was. They are now retired. FWIW- I bought the lesser supportive Ravenna's this time around. |

Expert 2373 Floriduh | Subject: RE: Which shoes to wear for upcoming marathon? Yeah, I agree running shoes doesn't need any break in. I'd do a couple of runs in them just to make sure there are no unexpected rubbing problems and then race in them. Have fun. |

I have replaced shoes with the exact same model many times and have experienced more than once manufacturing inconsistencies with seams that have caused some pretty nasty rubbing issues, some within only a few miles of running. Get a few runs in just to be on the safe side. Good luck with your marathon. |

They say shoes last 400-500miles so u could probably use them but "breaking in" The new shoes now would probably better. use the older ones for short runs less than 5miles until u hit that 4-500 mile window. That's my thoughts. Seems like everyone wants you to trash a pair of shoes before you need to. You really should have at least 2 pair that u cycle back and forth between while training for marathons anyway. |

Regular 606 Portland, Oregon | Subject: RE: Which shoes to wear for upcoming marathon? Do a run in the new ones. Did they feel better? Were there any problem spots? If everything is good, save them for race day. If they feel the same, break out the new ones every 50 miles or so to retest. With the pure line, Brooks really underestimates their lifespan. Obviously they have financial motivation to limit the mileage on each pair. You are in the perfect situation, having an aged pair and a new one. Test away and good luck on the race! |
