Comments: These twilight races always seems to go so quickly which is a pleasant surprise! As usual didn't feel great until 11km. Two gels - one at 8km one at 14km. With only 200m to go and about to enter the finish chute I accelerated to hold off a guy closing fast from behind and the L) hamstring gave a small cramp and threatened even more if I didn't ease off. This is the third race in a row now where this muscle has cramped late in races with minimal increases in exertion or while changing direction on a corner. Happy with intensity and pulled up very well afterwards. What would you do differently?: Probably started a bit quick again but I didn't suffer like the Twilight Half in March from a way too quick start. Nonetheless I was able to use the 'banked' time from the fast start in the mid point of the race when my pace dropped a bit behind the target pace. Post race
Warm down: Walk to car, bananas, protein drink. What limited your ability to perform faster: Have been unable to put in any hill work since the Gold Coast Marathon due to the groin strain and so felt a little limited in strength during the race. Aerobic capacity was fine. Event comments: This race is unusual in that it starts just before sunset and ends in the dark. Some parts of the course down by the waterfront were very dark (almost black!) on the second lap and the road surface was quite uneven at this point as well. The race is part of a running festival on the night that has a 1km for kids, a 5km, a 10km and the half marathon. Last updated: 2014-07-17 12:00 AM
