Subject: Ironman Maryland
Hi guys:

i am trying to get back into shape and want to do another ironman triathlon. i have done a couple olympics and half ironman since ironman wisconsin 7 years ago.

I was reading the race reports from this year's ironman maryland. it seemed the consensus was that the waves were choppy and there was a good amount of jellyfish? is that normal for the swim usually? I'm not the best at managing open water swim and kinda freak out when it's choppy when I have done open water swims in the long island sound and also around the great lakes.

for the people who did ironman maryland, would they recommend it to their friends and family?

thanks for the help.

i'm doing it next year - I had 2 friends do it this year - they both PR'd by over an hour (12 to 11 hrs) - they both said the swim wasn't that bad and jellyfish were light - but maybe it just depends on where they were swimming in the scheme of things

Is there reason why there is chop and jellyfish when you're swimming in a river. I understand there would be some current but wouldn't chop be more in a bigger lake or ocean swimming only?

The chop is a function of fetch -- large open spaces for winds to gather and amplify. The Eastern Shore of Maryland is pancake flat (mostly), and the Choptank is fairly wide, especially near Cambridge where the race is held, so there is lots of fetch. That's why the bike and run can be very windy, as well.

The lower portion of the Chesapeake Bay (and its tributaries) are brackish water, a mix of fresh and saltwater. In general, late Summer and low rainfall are ideal salinity for them. The species typically found here also don't like the water too salty either, so there's a decent chance they'd be worse in the river than in the ocean.

The Choptank is notorious for being choppy, especially at the mouth.  There is always a steady breeze over there and the swim is about 3 or 4 miles from the Bay where waves can get to 4 or 5 feet fairly regularly.  Not saying that to scare you off, but don't go in thinking that your going to get a flat-as-glass swim.  You might get lucky, but you might not.

I'm in for MD as well. I'm assuming the swim should be wet suit legal? Can anyone confirm?
Thanks!

I was there volunteering this year and it was wetsuit legal.  Since it's 2 weeks later next year, my guess is that it will be wetsuit legal then also.

I agree that Easton is a good place.  I got my parents a hotel room there, it's about a 20 min drive.  The next closest is Salisbury which is maybe 30-40 min away.  Also, there are a lot of house rentals in Cambridge and surrounding areas.  Check out vbro.com.

Jellyfish were low this year due to water temps. When I did it before WTC took over each year I was stung a number of times despite having full wetsuit on. Most of the folks I know this year were about 10' slower than their normal IM swim. For me I was always slower than any other IM distance race but assumed it was due to less folks before it was bought by WTC.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?
