Ten weeks to go! I am really looking forward to this race. A stress fracture kept me out on the Buffalo Springs 70.3 earlier in the year but it looks like I'm going to make it back for a decent performance at Soma. I'm really looking forward to the looped course with spectators. I haven't been in any long-course triathlons with spectators.

Good training everyone!

Hopefully I will see some fellow BTers there.  I just finished Barb's Race (HIM) a few weekends ago, so now I'm starting up with the Bridge training plan here on BT with week 10. Keep up the training everyone!

Hey Pilgrim,

Hey chile, I actually see we have been at two of the same races this year. I did the Mountain Man sprint, won the M 40-44 age group and I was at Las Vegas, there I won the Clydes division. Not sure I'll be so fortunate at Soma, there are some VERY fast clydes showing up.

I think it would be great to meet some BTers. My wife, who is also doing the 70.3, and i are staying at the host hotel. I like pasta the night before a race so it would be cool if someone had reccomendations. I would also LOVE Guiness on tap but not until after the race.

This will be my first 1/2 iron, stoked the race date is finally coming around. Less than a month till the fall splash and dash races start up. Anybody else doing these to race in the area SOMA is (and because they're fun).

This will be my first HIM also. I'm terrified!!! My sister lives in Phoenix so she talked me into it. Oly. is the longest race to date so I just hope to cross the finish line in one piece.

I'm having issues trying to get my bike out there. Anyone else?

Good luck everyone and I hope to meet some of you along this journey!

No issues getting the bike there for me... oh wait that is because I live 5 miles from the start line.

My suggestion to you if you are going to ship your bike is to ship it to Tribe Multisport. They do good work, are nice guys, and are the guys I take my bike too. They are also close to the race site.

Good luck you guys! I did SOMA last year, and it was put together quite well. I thought it was a good course for a first HIM. The spectators really did help out too.

Well, I just bought my plane ticket and I talk to a friend that works for FedEx. He will ship my bike for cheap!!

Now, I just need to train, train, train!! The run is my worst! 13 is a scarey number for me.

How is everyone else doing?

I saw that they put up an elevation profile map on the website. For those of you that live in the area- is it as flat as it looks- the most is only 100feet, or is the profile deceiving? What about all the turn arounds- will it be tough to maintain a good speed for the whole bike portion? What is the general opinion on wetsuits for the lake? I have a million more questions, but I'll stop for now! Have a great week of training!

It's as flat as it looks.

"Hills" consist of highway/lake overpass at Priest, and a slight hill on Curry Road. Curry and College have the most elevation change. I think this is where the elevation map hits the 1220 ft mark.

Also, there is a highway underpass at that loop-ety-loop by Curry Rd... (I think last year the loop was a no-passign zone.)

There's a slight swell of an overpass at McClintock ( I think?).

Rio Salado, and the rest of McClintock always seem to be of pancake type quality to me. Quite flat.

The corners aren't too bad. For a while it was quite sandy at that left turn on Rio Salado outside of the transition, but I think they've cleaned that up? Also, there's been construction on Washington for a long time. Not sure if they've cleared that out either. Otherwise you jsut have those 3 U-turns.

Somebody correct me if I've misrepresented any of these roads.

I forget the water temp for last year, but I found it helpful to have a wetsuit last year. Seems everyone was wearing one last year... ? Since there are wetsuit strippers on hand, you won't waste any time getting out of it.

It's pretty flat all around Tempe, there are no major hills on the bike at all. As for the water temp, we'll get to start swimming in the lake in mid September and about every 2 weeks after that so those of us that live here will be able to pass the word along.

Also you might like to know that the out-and back portion of the run is over a rocky/pebbly trail, and the part on the SouthEast side of the course is on a nice packed runner's trail. Also, Phx has little shade cover, so expect it to be fairly hot, despite teh temperature.

Here is the link to the Tempe Town Lake water temperature. Be aware the they measure it about 1 foot below the surface level so on a hot afternoon the temp reads very high in the water. (hence the water temp readout today of 107)

They say the water will be wetsuit legal for the race.

Wow! Thats some warm water- thanks for the link and the info! I still don't know what to do about a wetsuit- I only have my surfing one and I hate it- I can't move my arms! I don't really want to buy one for this race, but if it really would give me an advantage, then I'll bite the bullet. How do other people feel about wetsuits for this race?

Same as when I mentioned earlier about shipping the bike, they rent wetsuits too...

If you want, you can reserve a rental of a Neosport John wetsuit from them... I think the rental fee is only $20.00.

As for me, I'll have my Zoot John wetsuit on at the race. When I swam at the lake with it a little over a week ago I felt like I was gliding through the water.

The wetsuit rental is a good idea. My feeling is that if a race is wetsuit legal then wear a wetsuit because otherwise you are just penalizing yourself unless you happen to be one of those awesome swimmers with great form. When I did Buffalo Springs there was a guy on another of the relay teams who did the 1.2 mile swim in a little spedo.

24 minutes laterhe was out of the water! Not if they taped me to a jet ski could I do 1.2 in 24 minutes

Earlier someone was talking about the run corse. How much, if any, is on concrete?

The run course is primarily on a concrete bike path and has a little bit of dirt road that is hard packed dirt that is not too much different from running on the path. No need to worry about setting the racing flats aside for trail shoes. LOL

I second Chile's suggestion on Tribe!!!

Kevin (the shop owner) is extremely nice and really helpful in all situations.  If you want to set yourself up for a good race experience and you want to make sure the bike shop is going to take good care of you, go with Tribe!

P.S.

Let Kevin know where you heard about him (from BT), it's always a good thing to let him know that BT is the place to advertise cause then he might throw something BT's way.

I don't train in a wetsuit (I just feeze my butt off in the pacific)- will I be OK using one for the first (or maybe second) time in the race? I am super excited about the wetsuit strippers, however

I'm naturally a leg dragger...so when I put on a suit it helps out my times 10 fold (from a 1:30/100 to maybe 1:18/100).  If your not a leg dragger then you should expect some decrease in time but not as much.

Best advice is to make sure your wetsuit fits properly and that you have plenty of body glide to put so you don't get any rub rash from the suit.  Overall you will love the feeling.
