People always say you should't try something new during a race but if that's your only option then having someone who knows triathlon wetsuits fit you and wearing the suit for the first time in a race is probably a safe bet. The first time I ever wore a wetsuit was in a race and I spent the rest of the race thinking about how great my swim felt. As has been said, bring body glide.

Thanks! I think I'll try one out here and who knows, maybe I'll fall in love and spend more money.

Another question- for the people coming from out of town- where do you recommend staying?

Earlier someone was talking about the run corse. How much, if any, is on concrete?

I would estimate 70% concrete, 15% slightly rockier path, 15% packed dirt path... Something like that.

I've done 4 races in Tempe town lake. The first one was the Soma race in 2004 which I did without a wetsuit. While everything worked out fine, if I had thought about it more I would have rented a wetsuit.

As for the bike course, I find the new layout (bike course was different in 2004 and more similar to the IM Arizona course of 2006) somewhat frustrating. Last year, I almost got tboned by a guy completely out of control so I highly recommend you pay attention to the volunteers when they tell you a turn is coming up and slow down. I personally really dislike the uturns but I'm going back for a third year so that negative is far outweighed by how well the race is run.

See you all there.

Also on the wetsuit you can usually rent them for a week (at discounted rates) so maybe rent one at home and swim with it a couple of times first to see how it feels then decide whether or not to use it in the race. Some shops will even credit your rental fee to the purchase of a wetsuit. If you're comfortable swimming in colder water and do not like anything on your shoulders you may want to try a sleeveless. While a full suit is faster, I personally find a sleeveless to be much more comfortable since I don't overheat and there is absolutely no restriction on your arms.

Do you know your sleep #?  Honestly for me, where I sleep the night before a big race is super important and directly affects my overall performance the next day.  LOL, having said that I'm thinking about offering my spare room to my biggest competitor cause it has the mother of all uncomfortable futons.

Actually it really isn't that bad at all, in fact it's one of the best futons I've ever slept in but I hate futons period.

If I charged $5 at the door would you all be interested in a home cooked all-you-can-eat BT carb dinner at my house so we can all sit down and meet the night before the big race?  I know how important the dinner the night before can be and when your from outta town I know how lame it is to pick a random (supposed to be good) restaurant.  I figgure I can feed (drinks included) everyone at 5 bucks a head but if I research it and I can do it for less I will.

Takers?

Sounds like a great idea! I'd much prefer that over a crowded & busy restaurant, where it would take forever to get food for a huge BT group.

If I don't ride it with them, I am sure the tri club I train with will be riding it too.

I actually ride part of the course everytime I ride to work, which includes this morning.

This thread has been too stagnant, and I'm bored at work . How is everyone's training going? Does anyone have any cool races coming up before SOMA? Anyone as nervous as I am? Hope you all had a great labor day!

I am just hitting my taper this week for an iron distance triathlon that I will be doing September 23, the Oklahoma City RedMan, my first iron. The weekend before that, on the 16th, I will be doing a "local" sprint called the Cotton Country. It is part of the Southwest Challenge Series, an affiliated series of triathlons and duathlons in New Mexico and West Texas. This one is in West Texas, a small place called Levelland and it is LEVEL LAND. The course is stunningly flat. It's kind of cool because the first place for each age group is a miniature bail of cotton, a real miniature bail or real cotton, not a mock-up. I got one for winning the Clyde division last year and I'm heading back for more cotton. After the race, as part of your entry fee, everyone heads over to the Mean Woman Grill for lunch

I'm doing the Timex Tri in Tempe Sept 24th. Its right around the SOMA course area and should be a good warm-up for the big race. My Labor Day training mainly consisted of badminton, pool volleyball and 12 oz curls.

I swam 4000m for my 1:15 minute swim as according to the plan I loaded into my log. I don't follow it exactly but I try to put at least the same amount of minutes in. Plus I goto the lake on Thursdays and Saturdays for OWS and my gym has its pool closed for 3 weeks so I won't be hitting the pool, just the open water.

As for races, I have the Fountain Mountain International distance race on October 1st. It is a 1200m swim, 30 mile bike, and 10k run at Saguaro lake. The bike is chalenging as it is very hilly and the run is basically the Xterra race 10k. Shorter than the 1/2 Iron, but it will be a tough race.

Man, You guys are starting to scare inspire me. All I have is a sprint on Sept. 17th and then the big day in Oct.

I am following my training pretty close but I still feel very far from ready for this distance. I hope to start pulling it all together in the next few weeks.

My sister that I am doing the race with is getting married. So, the weekend I'm flying in to do the race has become a wedding planning weekend instead of a race weekend. I'm trying to find the balance between shopping for wedding dresses (ugh!) and smackdown mode!! She did it for me so "SUCK IT UP", right!

We need to start inpiring eachother!

I don't have anymore tri's scheduled until Soma, but I'm doing the Chips n Salsa half marathon this weekend.  I was thinking about doing Level land, but I can't get out of town that weekend.  So, hopefully i'll get some OWS in at Cochiti before Soma.  My coach says I'm right on schedule for Soma, so I'll have to trust him.  He wants me to do sub 7 min miles in the half marathon?  We'll see.

I have my first Olympic distance race on Sept. 29th in San Dimas. I'm also doing the Long Beach half marathon with my parents on Oct. 15th (they are walking, those old folks ). They are so awesome- they went from total couch potatoes 2mos. ago to walking 8miles on sunday!! They are super excited about finishing a half marathon while raising money for Tourette Syndrome, and I'm having fun acting as their coach.

You guys are all doing awesome!! Goodluck on all the upcoming races! I am self-coached, and my coach is freaking out that I won't be ready in October, but I'm doing my best following the free training plan on this website (and then adding stuff here and there). It's going to be an exciting day!

Hey Soma atheletes, I have successfully completed the Redman iron distance and feel amazingly good

Some have been wondering about a race report. Here is a link to my Blogger blog, I think that the experience was too much to limit to the BT race report template. With any luck you will have a computer setup that will allow you to hear my chosen theme song for this race and the little video clip of me crossing the finish line.

See you at Soma!

First post to an awesome website! Ok, less than 5-weeks til race day (gulp!) How's everyone doing? At about this point I start to get nervous that I haven't done enough but I've learned (the hard way) not to over do it and stick to the training plan. Anybody doing the pre-ride and run of the course on Oct. 7th? There's also a Splash-n-Dash that same morning - anybody? I'm driving from L.A. for the weekend and would like to swim, bike and run (part) of the course while I'm there. So either Splash-n-dash swim followed by pre-ride of the course on Sat., and run the course on Sunday, or swim & run on Sat. and ride on Sun.? I've looked at the bike course and with all it's twists and turns it'd be helpful to ride with someone who knows the course. Jeff at RedRockCo, who is very helpful BTW, said a group of them could ride on Sunday if I don't get a chance to join them on Sat., he also mentioned that there will be a pre-swim of the course on Oct. 14th which I can't go to unfortunately, but thought I'd let others know about it. Anybody interested in biking or running the course over the weekend of Oct. 7th, let me know.

What do I think?

1. We BTers should meet for a carbo-loading dinner on Saturday night
2. I am going to die of heatstroke during the race, but will have y'all beat with the low altitude in Phx
3. We are going to kick butt during the race!!

GO SOMA!
