Random Question...

I'm registered for the Boulder Sprint Triathlon next year. At the time I started on this adventure I thought I would have maybe 3 to 6 hours a week to train and figured that the Boulder Sprint would be a good first event. Life works in crazy ways... I've already done 1 sprint this year and have been training 7 to 10 hours a week. I now want to step my Sprint up to the HIM. The Sprint and HIM are on the same day, June 12th, so has anyone else tried/succeeded in "upgrading" your event registration? It's the official Ironman Event...

this is the first time *I* have heard of an Ironman sprint/70.3 on the same day - so it could be a new program - so not sure about upgrading. I didn't see anything on the website about it

best bet would probably be the email them and ask

Contact the RD.  I've made changes (up and down) in races before but never something as large as an IM event.

I've reached out via the Ironman website, just haven't heard back yet...

I've done it many times for runs 5 to 10 k etc. Hopefully you'll be able to do it for this event. I know HITS offered it for the Grand Junction race last year.

On a side note, the Boulder Tri series is a bummer this year. If I recall correctly you used to be able to register for the "series" and race the Oly 1/2 and Full and recieve the sprint for free. This year because of the 1/2 and sprint being the same day the price of the series offers no discount and no free sprint...But I'm registered for it anyway

I read somewhere about "bar ends" to put on your handle bars, do you recommend them? Is this similar to adding clip on aero bars?

The wheels are my first area of concern and I have started to shop around. I find it nauseating to think of spending the same amount for wheels as my bike. Any help?

Bike upgrades to gain speed: better wheelsets, a tri-bike, road bike with aerobars, even getting rid of those love handles before getting that lighter bike.

I was filled with anticipation for this event, as it was the first in what I hoped would be many triathlons, and I had no idea how I'd do.

How should I go about training for the marathon while also building base in the other two events? Doing this seems like it's causing me to break the 10% rule in running.

So when it comes to triathlon, the largest investment we make, in both terms, comes in the bike. Looking at ways to get faster, while considering a budget, is a bind for most triathletes.

Know that base training is not a component of training that is going to necessarily make you faster, but it will make you stronger and give you more endurance to last through the longer races.
