Greenville Triathlon - TriathlonSprint

Greenville, South Carolina
United States
Set Up Inc.
88F / 31C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 16m 36s
Overall Rank = 14/162
Age Group = F 35-39
Age Group Rank = 1/28
Pre-race routine:

Two slices of peanut butter toast, applesauce and a gel before warm-up.
Event warmup:

Swam for 10 minutes
Swim
  • 06m 38s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

I love to swim in 50 meter pools. But I belive I was enjoying myself a little too much. I took it pretty easy on the swim to save energy for the rest of the race. I felt really relaxed.
What would you do differently?:

Stay focused and swim a faster pace. After all, this is a race, not a leisure swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Had a pretty good T-1. Except that I almost went to the wrong rack. I counted 12 racks from the swim venue, but I saw a bright yellow bike racked exactly the same way as my bright yellow bike on the same side of the 10th rack. Thank goodness for bike numbers or else I probably would have taken off on someone else's ride.
What would you do differently?:

Trust my ability to count.
Bike
  • 42m 57s
  • 15 miles
  • 20.95 mile/hr
Comments:

This bike course was steeper than I remembered. I suffered during the first half with all the climbs. I rode faster this year than last year so maybe that is why the course seemed harder. I tried to keep from going anaerobic, but man, those hills just wouldn't let me do it. I guess this made up for my easy swim.
What would you do differently?:

Train more in the hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

I entered transition with a fellow from my rack. We had cat & moused each other the entire course. He howled in pain when he went to put on one of his running shoes. I asked him if he twisted his ankle or was cramping? He said it was just a cramp so then I went on to suffer more on the run. I knew he could walk it out and there wasn't anything I could do for a cramp.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I wanted to make sure that guy didn't need help.
Run
  • 24m 40s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

I tried to pep talk to myself during the run, but my legs would not listen. I even gelled 30 minutes into my bike just to make sure I had enough fuel and wouldn't run out of steam. I want so badly to break 23 minutes on a 5K and can't seem to do it. My left knee is killing me right now. Running is sooooo painful.
What would you do differently?:

I need to run with other people and do more track work to improve my spped. Losing 10 pounds probably wouldn't hurt, either.
Post race
Warm down:

Plunked down in a folding chair under a big tent and sipped ice cold water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

ITB problems on the run and lack of focus on the swim. I feel like I gave it everything I had on the bike.

Event comments:

I went in to this race hoping for a 1:15 and ended up with 1:16:36. So I just missed my goal. That's just more incentive for next year. That's what I love about racing. There's always new goals and milestones to reach.

Oh whoops, I thought you'd raced the Greenfield (MA) triathlon of a few weeks ago, but actually you said Greenville, SC. Blonde moment! LOL

But hey, I saw your bike split and your speedy swim, so I had to comment -- nice splits!

I'd also like to say that I share your "lose 10 and do more track work" sentiment for the run. It's all that stands between the good vs. great triathletes: a really fast run at the end of it all.

And kudos to you for racing to your goals season after season. You came really, really close today, but the best is still to come. Believe it! I do.

Best wishes, -Sunny

Congrats on the race!. My wife and I watched from the sidelines and it looked like a good course, I did not expect the trail or hill but it looks exciting. I've got a race in Lyman on Saturday so I decided to forego Greenville this year.
Start stretching out that ITband, if you get that cleared up you're going to be a demoness on the courses.

Thanks for all the positive comments! Greenville is a fun and challenging sprint. Gair, hope that your Lyman race goes well.
