New user 1351 Austin, Texas | Subject: compression tights The weather's getting brisk. In the past I've always just kept the legs warm with cheapo spandex, but I wanted to ask if anyone can really vouch for the higher cost compression tights like the 2xu brand. Are they actually worth it? I've read before that compression clothing is good for recovery but not necessarily good for using during the actual run. What do you wear to keep the legs warm during the colder months? |

Subject: RE: compression tights I like the 2XU brand and if I have to buy something I've never tried before that's one of the first brands I'll give a shot. I've ended up with a handful of Nike dri-fit compression tights that I've used for both running and cycling. They're good to about 25-30 degrees and I've done multi-hour rides in those temps with them. I got the ones with no cycling pad and wear cycling bibs or shorts beneath them. |

Master 6595 Rio Rancho, NM | Subject: RE: compression tights I recently bit the bullet and bought some CW-X. Like you I wasn't sure the high price tag was worth it. At the time I was having IT Band issues and the tights made a huge difference. More recently, with the cool mornings, the tights keep me warm and I think the support to my legs is also a huge benefit.

Member 256 Iowa City, Iowa | Subject: RE: compression tights I have the Nike hyper warm compression tights for running and they do well in temperatures maybe down to the teens (tolerable by me that is). I like them enough I'm considering getting a second pair of tights since I use them so much in the winter. I do wish mine had a back Ipper pocket so my next pair will certainly have this. I only wear my compression gear while training so I cannot speak to their recovery ability. Have fun choosing! |

Expert 972 Falls Church | Subject: RE: compression tights I only wear compression socks for recovery or during runs longer than 90 minutes. As for keeping legs warm for running, winter weight tights will do the trick down to the 20's or so. In colder temps, I end up needing another layer for my butt and upper legs. I use a thin silk layer or thin merino wool. Biking is similar except it's nice to have a fabric with some windblock added to it. I commute by bike all year round with temps into the low teens. So my "go to" pant has an extra layer on my rear end and my thighs. I also use a heavier winter weight underlayer. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: compression tights I have 2XU compression tights as well as CWX capris, and while I love them for after races and for long flights, i don't find them warm enough for real winter temps (in US obviously, not here!). I generally use winter-weight tights from a hometown (Oregon) company called Sporthill. They also make XC ski gear and have great fitted, warm, moisture wicking stuff for all conditions. A bit pricey but sometimes there are online sales on discontinued models, colors, and such, and I can sometimes get to their warehouse sales and promos at big meets in Eugene. Worth the $ IMO. Have had some of their gear for over a decade. I tend to cramp more in cold weather, so sometimes I wear a pair of thinner compression shorts or capris under the warm tights. |

Expert 2098 Ontario Canada | Subject: RE: compression tights Jamie I absolutely Luv my CWX tights the insulators are especially good for our Climate if you plan on running outside all winter in some instances around freezing they can actually be too warm, I have both insulators and Standard weight compression CWX tights I think they are just the best, pricey for sure but in my opinion worth every Penny. I use the standard weight down to around -5C then any colder I switch to the insulators, I have run the insulators down to -25C with a - 35 windchill outside with no issues . |

New user 1351 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: compression tights Thank you all again for your recommendations. RRH_88, rrruner and hotruner won with the CWX suggestion. Tonight I dusted off the piggy bank and got a pair with a sense of urgency due to the recent cold snap. So far they seem to offer great warmth, accelerated recovery, and joint support while I sit down and eat my dinner, and more importantly they make my rear end look like a million bucks (or at least the amount on the price tag, yikes....) I'm planning on running to work a few days a week in lieu of sitting on the subway like I usually do, and these ought to keep me nice and toasty. Enjoy the chilly weather everyone Edited by trijamie 2014-11-18 7:48 PM |

Expert 2098 Ontario Canada | Subject: RE: compression tights Good Choice I think you will come to enjoy your purchase, we had a -20 C wind chill yesterday at lunch when I went for a 5 mile run. I threw on My CWX insulators with a UA base1 LS top a ,UA crew neck top over that , Light NB Vest to break the wind, UA balaclava, merino wool socks, Dakota work gloves and headed out, I was actually over dressed a bit was a bit cool at first but toasty warm at the end of the run. There were only 2 other runners out at lunch that I saw as opposed to the normal 30 or so running around on Campus on any given normal lunch hour. It has to be really really nasty before I hit the TM for a run. |

Member 560 Utah | Subject: RE: compression tights I just barely ordered some 2XU brand ones and got them this week. I am on the fence about them. I can feel the compression in my calf area, but not so much in my upper legs. However, I did feel that they kept me warm and I did one run in them around 21 degrees. They weren't super warm, but warm enough. I mainly bough them for recovery though as I am going to be ramping up my training for my first IM. I like them, but not sure they were quite worth $132. But, I only wore them once so far. |

Could you use this for cycling? Does it feel tight on the knee area? |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: compression tights I've got some some Nike running tights and some Cannondale tights for the bike. Living in FL, there's only a few days a year when I get to wear them. The biggest thing for me is that they cover up any exposed skin from the wind. I did learn the hard way that I needed to wear some longer socks rather than my normal ankle-length ones to keep my ankles from freezing, particularly on the bike. Mark |

239 | Subject: RE: compression tights Last year I got the Under Armour Base Layer 2.0 leggings. I wore them under a pair of wind pants with an air temp of the low teens F and windchill (not from my fast running, mind you ) of around zero. They worked great. https://www.underarmour.com/en-us/mens-ua-base-20-baselayer-leggings/pid1230810 |

434 | Subject: RE: compression tights Have two pair of CW-X. Ran 5.5 miles in them today. Also have the UA ColdGear. Although UA are very well made, I like the compression factor in the CW-X better; they make a nice run feel great! Could not enjoy colder weather running as much without them. |
