Subject: running after knee scope help
its been just 12.5 weeks since I had minor chondroplasty (grade 2) and plica shaved down. The reason I had the scope was because of a sharp stabbing pain and I'm thankful that is gone. I've never had any pain after surgery and can power walk and do everything, but run. I thought I'd be back to running 6-8 weeks later, but when I try to run I get pain near the incision. I've done all my exercises religiously, but feel like my knee can't take the load when running. After 3 minutes I stop. I can power walk a 13 minute mile, but when I convert to my midfoot strike I can't seem to do it. I'm wandering if I should see my ortho again or just be lucky to be cycling again. I thought it took about 3 months to heel. Curious to hear about other experiences

i had a 'simple' scope - ie meniscus trim. I actually had 2 but thats another story. Its not far from 3 years since that surgery and basically running is a no no and i did not have articular damage.

Personally i'd be happy with where you are......

Hi there,
Recovery time for this surgery is highly individual. Its usually 2-3 weeks after surgery that you start walking normally but there are people who are on their feet within a week but face problems later. I had this surgery and what I found out from my treatment at orthopedic long island was that it is extremely important to do your exercises and physical therapy sessions and not procrastinate them. It is indeed painful in the beginning to even move around for long term benefits you have to bear with the pain. A grade 2 chondroplasty however isn't a much serious one and running shouldn't be an issue. After the knee is rehabilitated, running should be fine...as long as you have completed rehab (full strength and range of motion, no pain, no swelling, ...and the knee should be tested - hopping, jumping, running, lateral movements, etc). I recommend you look into your rehab procedure to make sure you're doing everything right.

My right knee has a pain in the front, just below the kneecap. I walked 24 miles of IM Louisville. No pain while walking but it started immediately when trying to run.
