My January went well, the highlight being the Tour of Sufferlandria. My running took a back seat and I swam with my masters group twice per week. My next two events are running (Rivertown Races Half and the River Bank Run) so my running should pick up in the coming weeks. I broke down and bought some tights today so I can run outside... my dog will thank me, but all I will be able to think about is the song from Robin Hood: Men in Tights about manly men in tights.

My parents left for FL last week and I've debated surprising my wife with a weekend down there but can't bring myself to pay $500+ for flights and then another $500 for hotels. I talked to her earlier today and we have a plan to save up and go to some fancy all inclusive resort next year. Maybe I can turn it into a race! Any suggestions?

How is everyone weathering (ha) this polar vortex? I admit I have gone outside as little as possible.

In the meantime I'm trying to add to my swimming and biking by one day every other week. I am already seeing gains on my swim, which is encouraging. But getting in the car, driving down there, walking outside, getting in that cold water... ugh! Running is pretty steady -- I am managing 25-30-ish miles per week on the treadmill. I gave myself a hard limit of a 10-mile long run once per week and I think that has helped my sanity!

My Netflix watching has remained plentiful, haha. So far this winter I've watched all of Breaking Bad, the first six seasons of Parks and Rec (I'm trying to DVR all of Season 7 before I finish it off), the first two seasons of House of Cards to prepare for season 3 being released next weekend, and, at the suggestion of a friend, I just started Arrested Development. I hope I don't need to find another show before it warms up. =(

ToeFuzz, I'll be in Florida in less than a month for my sister's wedding and I am half-debating going down there a week or two early, ostensibly to "help" with planning but really to get the heck out of this cold weather. Sadly I don't know much about the race scene in Florida but I can guess that it is busy! I am sure Florida race sites exist like Michigan ones do.

I'm trying to focus more on my running as my next races are the Rivertown Half in late April and the River Bank Run in May. I've been running 13 - 15 miles per week so I definitely need to step it up. Fortunately there's enough time

I've been swimming 2x per week with my group and took a big step today. My swimming went from 1:45-1:50 per 100 down to 1:35. We swam 4 x 100 @ 2:00, 3 x 100 @ 1:55, 2 x 100@ 1:50 and I was able to hit 1:34 - 1:36 on all of them, and this was after 2000 yards of warm up and sprints. I'm not sure why I took such a sudden leap forward, but I have my ideas. I try to focus on one swim thought, which has been high elbows on the catch and pull for the past month. I think that has finally become (mostly) habit so I was able to focus on being long in the water, keeping my legs high and actually kicking. There's also been some obvious improvement in my swim fitness as well.

Biking is down to 2 or 3x per week, just trying to maintain what I have.

Weight loss is going well, around 2 pounds per week. I should be under 200 for the first time in 20 years (junior high) sometime this week!

Wow toefuzz, your swim times are blazing...I would think 1:35/100 should have you placing in your AG for the swim...

Unfortunately I don't think I can keep it up for too long as I am terrible at breathing... that's the next step!

I think you're being modest... If you can swim those times for the ladder you listed and all of it is after 2,000 yards of drills etc., I'd say your breathing is working pretty well!!

I may have to rethink whether I OWS with you this summer... Or I'll need to be in a kayak...

Maybe I don't have a big enough frame of reference. I started swimming late last year but didn't do so consistently until I joined the group January of this year. I am still middle of the pack in our slow lane, which is why I didn't think 1:35 was that impressive. Maybe that's a good sign that I should stick with the group as most of these people have been working with the coach for awhile.

If I remember correctly, the workout was something like:

200 swim
200 kick
200 pull
8x25 v sprints
8x25 on the 40
8x25 on the 35
6x25 on the 30
6x25 on the 25
6x25 on the 20 (couldn't make these)
200 pull
4x100
3x100
2x100
50 easy swim

I was thinking about swimming a 1k yard time trial Friday morning to try and establish a baseline. It will be boring, but will serve as a benchmark going forward over the years.

Agreed, those are some decent times. Even if it's for a sprint, the fact that you are hitting new, faster speeds is a sign that you are improving, right? I'm not that fast but I have had a few "Aha!" moments in the pool and it's always a good feeling. =) I am doing a 1000 m time trial once a month or so for the same reason.

We did more 100's today and I was able to hit the same times... even made 1:33 once!

We followed that up with some 200's (2 of them @ 1:53 pace and 1:43 pace) and a 400 (1:43 pace) so I'm over the moon happy. My A race triathlon isn't until August (MiTi) so if I can work on my endurance and hold that for the entire race I'll be in a pretty good position coming out of the water. Whoo hooo!

I was happy with 15 today and actually ran outside on the White Pine Trail. 8 awesome miles with actual sun!

Warmer temps coming in the next week. I love my new fat tire bike, but can't wait to get outside on the 29er and my tri bike in the next month.

I ran 12 glorious miles in the sun this afternoon. It felt so good to get outside. Although I am definitely feeling muscles I haven't been using on the treadmill -- ouch!

I actually rode my bike outside Sunday and it was awesome. Well, actually it was a teammate's CX bike that I was thinking about buying. That one didn't work out and I swore off looking at bikes... 2 hours later another teammate messaged me with a Godfather like offer (one I can't refuse). I'm trying that one out tonight when we go ride some gravel. I never thought I could love the sun this much.

I made it out to Island Lake today. It was great! Perfect biking weather. I wasn't brave enough to see how warm Trout Lake was. =)

I keep trying to get my kids to jump in my parents lake so I can gauge the temperature. They aren't as much fun now that they are older and don't blindly follow my instructions
