Subject: Tri Shorts
I just bought an X-Terra wetsuit for my first spring tri and trying to keep my tri shorts on the cheap. I'm looking for something I can train in a pool and race in. I will probably put a bicycle jersey on for the bike & run legs. I see a lot of good deals on jammer shorts, see link, but I think the seam and lack of padding are a problem. Do you have any short recommendations for a beginner? I am looking to spend under $80.

You're probably going to want to have two pairs of shorts, jammers for pool training and then your tri shorts (which can be used for bike riding, too).  The reason for this is the chlorine in the pool will quickly destroy your $80 racing suit, so other than a couple of swims to get how they feel while swimming go with clothing designed for the pool.  Most folks recommend polyester-based jammers (as opposed to lycra); they seem to last a lot longer.

I use whatever "grab bag" jammers they have on swimoutlet.com.  For races I swear by Desoto stuff, both the Carrera (in your price range) and the Forza (maybe a little higher).

Check out here, a couple of options under $40 for tri shorts. I think I saw a ~20% coupon on Facebook with no order minimum.

Definitely get a pair of jammers for chlorine. Now is a good time to check out swimoutlet, you should be able to find something under $20.

What is your opinion on shirts? Is a jersey change at T1 worth it or should I find something that fits under the wetsuit?

X2

I use a set of TYR hammers for the pool and I wear zoot performance tri shorts. Check on swimoutlet first and possibly ebay. Can find some deals on there from time to time, or check the classifieds here

Try putting on a jersey after getting out of the shower, it can be more difficult than you think!

Don't do it. I made this mistake in my first 2 races. I thought I could do something different the second time but got the same results, lots of swearing, tugging, and pulling. I've read about techniques with rolling the top up and then unrolling once it's over your head but I don't see the reason to even mess with that. My third race I just swam in my top, next year I think I'm going to try a 1 piece.

This is really good stuff!!!!! Thank you!!!!! One more opinion. Almost 99% of the time my bike training involves pulling my toddler in a trailer. I look at it as resistance training. Along those lines...........Is there any big deal training in loose swimming trunks in the pool and not get the jammer shorts? I will be doing some open water swimming in my wetsuit to break it in and get a feel for open water swimming.

I train exclusively in regular swim trunks. Like you, I view it as resistance training, and I'm more comfortable!

Sign up for their email list.... they regularly send out 45% off coupons.

TJ Maxx has had some try and cycling stuff lately, so its worth a check as well. I'd get some jammers now an then see what kind of bargains you can find on shorts. The pool eats spandex and I would never wear racing clothes in the pool.

For swimming in a pool, training, use swim jammers.
For swimming in a lake or other OWS, you can actually use your Tri shorts under your wetsuit.

For Tri shirts, I use a one piece, so it's a non issue for me. But in the beginning, I used a bike shirt too. Yes, it's a little difficult, but whatever, use a towel at T1. You can use a towel to clean off your feet too..

To get stuff cheap, there's a ton of spots. There's always a ton of coupons and blow out specials all the time. Use Facebook, Twitter and get to know all the manufacturers. Read Tri specific magazines and see what works for you. Also try ebay. I am always on ebay looking at stuff. Just type in TRIATHLON is the search bar and see what comes up.
After a few seasons you'll know what fits you and what doesn't.
I like zoot and 2xU.

You basically get what you pay for with tri shorts.  Cheap shorts generally suck.  Expensive shorts generally do not.

I bought jammers and a tri shorts.
My first pair of tri shorts were tyr and they lasted about a 6 months of swim & bike training.
This year I got Speedo jammers, cycling bibs, and picked up a zoot tri shorts right before the race.
Chlorine destroys whatever you wear.

Id recommend a jammer for swimming. Quite a bit faster in the jammer.

There's a place for "resistance" training in the pool but unless you have your form dialed in there may be more to gain going the opposite direction using fins.  There's a retired Collegiate coach here and he advocates using fins for all levels for the reason; to learn what its like to swim faster you need to know what the water feels like while swimming faster. Basically is saying you will learn to optimize body positioning by sensing the path of least resistance.

On the wetsuit, there's no "breaking it in". If it hasn't been in the water for a long time, simply place it in a bathtub with a few inches of water and let it soak for a bit the day before you plan on using it.

If your bike jersey has a full zipper, then it won't be tough to put on when wet. If it's a pull-on with a 1/2 or 3/4 zipper, it can by tough. One thing that helps is stepping in and pulling it up rather than trying to slip it over your head and pull it down.
