Subject: Going to Du it in 2015
Hi, everyone-

I joined about a month ago when I started toying around with the thought of giving a duathlon a try. I was searching for new motivation to get off the couch and get fit, because wishing I had my old fitness level and body composition back just wasn't turning out to be enough motivation for me.

My husband just surprised me with an early Christmas present - two race registrations for 2015. They are both sprint length races, but that is good enough for me! I am already nervous - even though the first is not until June - but really looking forward to the feeling of accomplishment I know they will bring. The first is 1.5/10/3.1 miles and the second is 2/19.5/3.3 miles so both short but the second, in September, a little bit harder. I ride a cyclocross bike so I am not expecting to win any medals!

Since the beginning of November I have lost over 10 pounds while working on my running and biking (I am up to running over 3 miles without walking and riding 30) and now I am looking at some other events and races (5k, etc) to give me things to look forward to and get used to the competition atmosphere.

I will be on here a lot more as I work toward my goals and I look forward to learning from all of you!

Welcome! Glad you've got your races circled for the year. I doubt that cyclocross bike will slow you down significantly. You'll be just find. I didn't see that you've done any swimming. My advice would be to get into the pool and make sure you're swimming a few times a week.

Great job on the weightloss!  Nothing like official race registrations to keep you accountable.  Thinking about swimming?

I won't be doing any swimming or tri's for a few reasons... First, I am a health inspector and inspect some of the pools in our county. Enough said. I could swim in the river not too far from my house but honestly I'm not that keen on cold water or worrying about some a-hole who doesn't know what he's doing running me over in his boat. Lastly, after some bad group swim experiences during my time in the Coast Guard I'm not all that keen on swimming around other people unless I have to.

Maybe I'll get over it and give it a go, but for now I only have duathlons, plus a few 5ks, 10ks, and bike rides, marked on my calendar.

So if you're the health inspector isn't it your job to make sure the pools are up to standard? I get what your saying it's like the guy that used to work at McDonalds that won't eat there any more. But it seems like you could make a real positive difference in the pools since you have the authority to do so. If they aren't clean...shut them down.

Well of course we shut them down if they don't meet standards. That's a given.

Because I'm not that fast going slow is, well, really slow - especially when I'm trying to train by heart rate. It feels like I'm going backwards. Is this normal?

The cause of the sleeplessness could be anxiety to get out and compete but more often than not the inability to sleep is a fear of what might happen, of what might go bump out on the race course.

I got a new pair of the same size / brand of shoes and started running on them. On my left foot, the toe next to the big toe starts to get a little painful and goes numb after the first 1-3 miles.
