Adam(Alan)-we expect nothing less than a win this weekend... :-) Have fun racing!

Well have burned some good calories...I believe a cold beer(s) on the deck are in order for me after work! Going to be sunny and 54! I may even try take the bike out for a quick spin on the highway.(in town gravel/sand/potholes are brutal)

Its hovering around -5C (low 20s F) here. We had snow last night even. I'm glad my first race is on an indoor track. First outdoor is next friday, hopefully it warms up a bit. I'll run outside in colder temps than I'll ride. -15C (5F) is about my threshold for running. If it's sunny outside, I'll ride in and around -2C (28F). We probably won't see temps in the 60s here until the mid/end of April and even then it'll be dodgy until the end of May. I remember a few years back (5 now I think) Jess and I moved into a new apartment at the beginning of March and we were in shorts and t-shirts. The weather changed so rapidly that we went for a hike wearing shorts and t-shirt and were hiking through 3 feet of [packed] snow. I always joke that we should all idle our cars for a few hours a day in the spring to hasten global warming to get summer here quicker and then just plant a buttload of trees come summer to offset. :P

I had never heard of that product before you mentioned it. I had a look over Rainmakers review of it and I am sold. It's the perfect compromise between the 920xt and the Apple Watch at a significantly reduced cost. I think I will be getting this watch. I love that I can have a nice looking watch that isn't too sporty and still be able to throw on an HRM and go for a run or see my speed/cad data when I'm out for a ride on my commuter bike. 

I don't think it will hold up as a true training computer though. I wouldn't want to work with this thing during a triathlon or legit training ride but if you're looking for something that can perform those tasks in a pinch and still tel you the time when you're at work, then I say go for it. As for running, I think it would be no less useful than any of Garmin's Forerunner models.

thx for keeping me honest guys. The only reason I was thinking of sitting it out was because I know my time will not be what I feel like I am capable of because I have not done what I needed to do in order to achieve that. It was just my pride/ego. I will run my run plan for my IM training then do a run/ walk for the rest. since my IM plan in about time not miles it will just be what it is. Again thanks for calling me out on my own BS.

Got in my 1:45 bike and made up my swim from earlier in the week. Bike felt great but it was 50 and raining so again it was on the trainer. I think God is just laughing at me bc once again yesterday was beautiful and 70's.

Just got back from getting my bike fit.. Seems as though it was well worth the investment, my fit is WAY different, much more comfortable and efficient. Fitter told me that there was about a 3-5" change in position overall. About to get some time in on the trainer to see how it goes.

Little late on the topics to consider but here are my two cents

1) Stones, I feel like I really enjoyed the beetles in high school, when I was young and naive. Then as I grew and matured I realized what the Stones are.....Amazeballs

2) I always feel like I have my 8 spare tires around my gut to fuel me and recover after a workout, maybe I am wrong on this but I need to lose so much that it doesnt make sense to me to eat after a workout. Maybe I am going at this wrong, DQ...THOR any comments on this as people who have lost big.

Sorry, folks, my weekly check in here,

horrible week training wise, I have been out walking lots with my daughter and our dog, and I feel like I should just run, but my motivation is never there to have it happen. I have to figure something out to get my in gear. I am also thinking about picking up some kettle bells for some home strength workout, anyone have any tips on those, browsing amazon and I am hit with countless options and no real clue which ones are good. I figure it is some iron with a handle so it should be hard to mess up. Thoughts?

Everyone looks to be killing it! training wise, especially Thor, if you havent checked out his training log yet, go do it now, man is a full on BEAST! inspirational man!

Scott Congrats on the weight loss. As for your marathon and your decision to do your normal Tri training that day, I like it. That's kinda what tomorrow is to me. You know what you won't be doing in 3 weeks? Carrying 10 extra pounds with you. Good job.

Alan I think -15C (5F) is about the limit for my running too. I was within 5F of that this year, but I lucked out that it was warmer than expected that day. Sorry to all of the Canadian folks for having a longer winter. I have had it at this point....then again maybe you're used to it.

Weather After the 5F talk above, I guess that I should be happy that it'll be a balmy 29F for the run. Yes, it was 60F yesterday. What's 30F right?

Justin Hopefully a little warmer weather is all you need to get your motivation going.

Motivation Speaking about motivation....I saw this the other day and thought everyone would like this. I think this training would get me a PR for sure.

Hello from Egypt!!

I made it on ?Thursday, my bags made it today (Saturday)... ugh, but not the worst, seeing as I got them finally. I've never been so happy to see flip flops though! Yesterday I went for a three hour walk around Cairo. I was a little lost, but never too bad. There is no running in Cairo for a single woman. I'd dare say no running in Cairo for anyone, but I think a man could get away with it. I did see a group of bikers while I was out--that is a first for me--seeing people engaged in purely recreational biking activities in Egypt.

Unfortunately, due to the luggage snafu, I'm stuck in Cairo until Monday, when another batch of our archaeologists arrives and we will travel to Amana together. That means limited working out until then! I'm going stir crazy. Yesterday's walk helped, but today I'm already itching for a run. I will do some yoga after lunch and maybe another walk later when it cools off (95F here today).

Everyone looks like they are having great weeks (or most everyone--sorry Justin!).

Cairo seems to be making progress.  My wife and I were there for part of our honeymoon (one day stop on a cruise through the Med) in November 2011, and it was still mostly chaos then.  There's just so much potential there, between the gold and oil reserves and the tourism dollars alone, and the beaches on the Med and the Red Sea.  With it not being on the euro, they can manipulate their currency against the euro and dollar to really bring in the money and blow Greece and Italy out of the water.  They just need to copy Turkey and Mexico wholesale.

Saturday update... RACE DAY!

A fairly large group of coworkers got together this morning for the Epilepsy Foundation seize the day 1 mile fun run and 5k. One of our coworkers daughters suffers from a rare form of epilepsy, and we lost a coworker a little over a year ago to epilepsy, so the foundation holds a big place in our hearts at work. We hit our goal of raising $3000 this year, and had around 30-40 people from work show up to walk the fun run together. The fun run for me turned into watching over the bosses grandson who wanted to run most of the mile...which turned into a mile and a half or so..so before the 5k I had already ran more than I have been with my training plan 0.o

Stretched out and let my heart rate settle a little before the 5k started.. I got into what I though was gonna be a good starting spot..ended up getting stuck behind a car they started the race from for a solid 20-30 seconds. Settled into a decent pace...there was WAY more hills than I was expecting, 80% of the course was probably climbing.

The course was through LSU's campus, started and ended next to Death Valley..which was an awesome feeling. Back half of the course was through sorority Rowe, along side the campus lakes...happened to notice a group of sorority girls behind me...decided to drop off pace a bit for a little drafting Picked up the pace the last 100yds or so, got up on my toes as best I could, past a couple people on the final stretch..

What surprised me more was the fact that I finished 25th out of 420! Considering I've never even attempted a 5k in training, much less in a race, I was shocked.

Now I just gotta get my calfs loose, I've gotta work tonight 0.o

With my HIM 2 weeks away I'm tossing out counting my calories. I need food and a lot of it I started feeling like I was robbing some performance and this close to race day I can't take the chance. If I was to put on 2 pounds it wouldn't change anything in the race so I'm not to worried. I'll get back on it after I recover.

Speaking of the race...a bunch of us from my team drove the 2.5 hours up to the race site this morning. We rode the course and did one of three loops on the run. The swim is in an "M" shape and now I see why. The lake looks tiny so it was most likely the only way to get the 1.2 miles in that lake. It was also crazy hilly for Florida. I know that sounds odd but there was 1230 feet of climbing. For you up north this isn't a big deal but for me with the highest point around here a bridge at 75 feet I felt it big time in the legs Just have to get through this week then it's taper time! I think I'm ready for this!

Be careful with your nutrition though; up your salt intake a bit, but don't go overboard.  Keep it mild and innocuous.  I would eat heavier on Friday, and then normal/light on Saturday.  One of the worst things is being irregular in the gut.  A HIM is serious business, but doesn't require a full carbo-load.  Keep it mild and innocuous.  At Rev3 Quassy last year, I burned ~3,500 calories, and Racine was similar, ~3,650.  Glycogen reserves are ~2,000 calories, and at a lower aerobic intensity, perhaps 60 or 70% of total energy expenditures are from glycogen.  Long story short, you can probably get to mile 9 on just water.  Of course, the psychological limiters are going to kick you in the teeth at mile 2, so that's not really possible.  

Stick to your plan, execute it flawlessly, nothing new on race day, and be ready to analyze and review it in detail afterward; learn from this race for application to your IMFL.  Keep your eyes on the prize

The proper number of bikes to own is N+1, where N is the number you currently own.

Today, I stopped by REI because, hey, who needs a reason?  Turns out, it's their spring garage sale, and all the returned stuff they have from the winter is 50% off the normal garage sale prices.  

Long story short, lo and behold, my new 29'er:

 

It was less than $300.  If it had been ridden more than 3 times by the previous owner, I would be surprised.  After cleaning and lubing the chain, my shop rag was still mostly red.  I've had dirtier chains from 20 mile road rides, let alone playing in the dirt.  3x10 speed Shimano drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes, lockout suspension fork . . .all kinds of goodies.  

I don't know how much I'll actually ride it, but hey, it's one more bike scratched off my wish list.  Now to find some single track . . .

Alan - how did it go??

Nicole - beautiful smart watch, never hear of it, but will see how it looks in "real life". I am extremely happy with my 910, and honestly it can do many more things than I need

Geaux - congrats on your charity run and excellent results!

Alex - I am training as well for a HIM, end of may, and while excited for the challenge (my first HIM), sometimes feel very scared of DNF. Do you have similar feelings, that we may take a bit too big challenges or it is just me?

Dave - cycling jersey ordered, thanks so much for the work you put on it!

Justin - I did enjoy much more Beatles when I was younger, the older I get, the more I enjoy the Stones

And food wise, I just look around and see in old men living 80 or 90 years who had an active life, eat whatever they had around -unprocessed- and drank a glass of red wine daily (i.e. my grandfather, died at 105, never saw him drinking water.... and never eat anything he could not pronounce). So I take it very simple: eat at home 6/7 nights, and regarding training I do supplement with protein after a long workout (anything beyond 1 hours), use whey protein, and eat it before 20 min after the workout to improve recovery. But that´s about it, don´t miss anything if it is good (from fat to chocolate, from beer to wine)

Today did a 90k bike ride in a cold but sunny morning, very happy as I could do it in 3.30h. Hope to reduce it to 3h by the day I do my HIM in May.....

Race Day Summary The original plan was to run with my buddy for the first 3 miles until after the big hill and then try running race pace for a few. I was going to treat it like a training day. Instead, my buddy dropped off immediately so I changed the plan to a race day practice run. I started at a comfortable pace and after warming up I improved the pace throughout the race. I didn't push myself too hard, but I modeled the curve of what I would like to do come half marathon day.

I've only done one other 10 mile race in the past (this one last year). It's obvious that the training I've been doing with your guidance/support/motivation/etc. has better prepared me. Here are a couple of notes:

- Things don't hurt right now (specifically calves). They hurt immediately last year and I was 9 minutes slower. I'll check in on DOMS in a day or two.
- I didn't walk anything this year, last year I did - a lot.
- The hills didn't kick my butt as much, training more on hills this time must have helped.
- I could have taken this to 13.1 today easily. Last year I was DONE!
- I was the passer when the going got tough, not the passee
- The weather was 29F and breezy. Last year was 44F. So one could argue the conditions were worse...at least for those near me to hear me whine about the cold.

So in summary, when you prepare better you do better and feel better. Hmmm...

Results PR time - 1:39.00 (9 min improvement); Pace: 9:52 Continuing this pace would give me a 2:09ish half marathon time, that's a PR by 12 minutes, but I still have 3 weeks. Also the HM course isn't hilly like this one was, so I hope to improve on this by default.

Beer I swung by the local beer authority to get my deserved reward (in full gear on the way home). I wanted Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse Dunkel, but I had to go with the regular. Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse is one of my favorite beers. I like trying new ones, but today was not that day.
