I also created my own "sports" drink that worked really well in the hot southern US climate where I used to live. I mix this in my 22oz sports bottle.
Fill 2/3 full with water. Add teaspoon of salt. Fill up with dark grape juice (no added sugars, no preservatives, 100% juice). This worked well for me being a heavy sweater and prone to dehydration.


I definitely need to try the "sports" drink you made. I'm always looking for something besides Gatorade. What does everyone else use?? Do you only use water and whatever your liquid nutrition is or do you add another electrolyte replacement drink in there as well?

And I just wanted to pop in and say hello! I have been a terrible group member.  Life is so busy right now! I thought having little ones was busy...it's the teens that will kill you :D

 

I have been reading posts when I can and keep intending to pop in and inspire everyone but well....anyway! Hope everyone is well...we are all preparing for a cold snap....30's tonight.  That is FRIGID for south florida...*watch for falling iguanas*

Facts of the case:

Budget: $1,000
Current Setup: 2012 Cannondale CAAD10 with Shimano 105, SPD clips, Syntace aero bars, Adamo Road Saddle, Wahoo speed/cadence sensor paired with my iPhone 6 (mounted) running trainerroad inside and strava outside.
Races this year: Sprint tris every other weekend, maybe an Olympic thrown in. Targeting Big George 70.3 Labor Day weekend as an A Race (


The Options (as I see them)

A-buy the shiny, sleek aero toy

Have a lead on a good deal. 2009 Cervelo P2 Ultegra in my size. Good condition (rear derailleur looks like it laid on the ground, everything else fine) stock everything. $1000 takes it home. I'd keep the CAAD10 for training here in NYC.

B- get strategic, train and race smarter on existing bike

$600- Used Powertap G3 wheel (would have to keep my eye on craigslist/BT/ST/ebay
$150- Garmin Edge 500
$79- Giro Air Attack helmet
$100-$200- Lighter, more focused SPD OR Speedplay pedals.


So what would you do? Knowing that there's a solid chance I hoard the cash for race registrations anyways :-) figured it's a good conversation starter.

Hey Ted, tough call. I think both have their pro's. Having a dedicated tri bike in addition to a road bike will no doubt bump your speed. On the other hand, the aero goodies and the powermeter will also make you faster and can be taken with you to a potentially new bike in the future Moreover, a powermeter can be a powerful training tool, taking the guessing out of pacing and training as well. But you will have to do some homework and analyze your data in order to reap the benefits. I've just started riding with power and am still on a road bike but my budget was even lower than yours so it was an easier choice Plus I will be doing long course racing where pacing is more crucial to short course racing (I think). Of course, for training it doesn't matter the distance you race, you will benefit regardless.

Definitely a good conversation starter of course I think we all love spending other people's money haha. And the draw of a new bike is most likely higher than a powertap, a bike simply is sexier than just a wheel!

Here is what I have done so far on my $1000 budget.

1) 4 Month Gym Membership for pool access $160 2) 70.3 race entry and fees $226 3) Wet Suit $174 4) bike pumps $25 5) water bottle rack $5 6) Used 2001 TT bike $300.  7)bike labor/bike fit $20 (it was normally a lot more, but they told me my bike frame was 2" too long and that the only thing they could do to help was to sell me a new bike with a shorter frame for $1500+. So... I started riding 2" further up on the saddle and everything is going fine. My long rides have been going great.  I am averaging 3.3 MPH faster than what I was averaging on my mountain bike and riding with less effort at the same time).

Fortunately I had everything else I needed (i.e. Garmin forerunner, running shoes, goggles, swim cap, swim suit, run/bike clothes, sports belts, Energy Gels, bike helmet, toe clips, head lamp, reflector vest, etc.) already on hand.  

I am a use it up ware it out make it do or do with out type of guy.  I figure as I learn more about the sport I will have a better idea of what equipment is the best fit for me and my style.  I would hate to make a huge investment only to find out that what I got wasn't the right equipment for the way I race.  At this point I am still improving every week on my rides, swimming, etc..  Then I get to the point that I am no longer able to make steady improvements I will consider upgrading anything that is holding me back.  Until then I will work with what I have (which is a lot better equipment than what most have got into the sport with) and learn as much as I can from it so that when I am ready to swap it out I know what I need to look for in a replacement.

Well, I went through the MRI process for my shoulder last Wed and went to the doctor on Friday to go over the results.  He barely even had the door closed and hadn't even sat down yet before blurting out "yeah, you've got a complete tear of the labrum".  The labrum is essentially fibrous tissue around the ball and socket joint of the shoulder.  I asked whether rehab alone would suffice and he wasn't very encouraging on that strategy and he recommended surgery.  Nice.  Due to my schedule and schedules of a couple surgeons I can't even get a consultation until March 2 so I'm guessing surgery will be in mid-March.  I've got a 50km x-c ski marathon in 2 weeks that I am definitely not going to miss (this will be my 18th year of doing that race) so I will see how I do with one good arm.  Its gonna be tough but I simply am not going to NOT do it.  This puts racing IM Couer d'Alene in June in jeopardy and I will have to wait and see.  I purchased the cancellation insurance (first time doing that ironically) so I assume that surgery would be a valid excuse to ask for the refund.  Luckily I can still run and ride the computrainer so its not a total loss but swimming is out for a while.  Recovery is supposed to be 6 weeks post-surgery and full recovery in 3-4 months.

There was no one traumatic event that caused the tear..it appears to be just overuse due to a lot of swimming and changing my stroke this winter I imagine.  The doctor is a sports medicine specialist so I trust him.  I don't think there's any way my swim will be competitive for a June Ironman.  That puts even more pressure on the bike and run to try to qualify for Kona.  I've already told my wife I want to transfer to IM Mont-Tremblant but it may take some more "negotiations" with the family schedule




I'm sorry about the shoulder. Hope you feel better soon.

For the Florida peeps here -
I mentioned before that we have booked our spring vacation. We are heading to Florida, St. Pete's, the beginning of April. I always like to find a race while travelling and found a sprint triathlon to do (Escape Fort De Soto). This is going to be my test to see where my fitness really is for open water swimming and cycling. I will decide after that whether I'm going to commit to a HIM this year.
We have decided that I'll take my bike instead of renting one. Does anyone have any suggestions on groups in the area to swim/bike/run with while I'm there? I checked out the bike shops for group rides. I'm on the slow side for all of the above so a little nervous to just check out the tri clubs.

So sorry I've been MIA and haven't gotten around to making a list of upcoming races. If someone wants to take over that job for me it wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit! Busy at work and home, just trying to get some running in. I need to start IM training soon, but I have a tough mudder in two weeks and a marathon (or half - I haven't decided yet) in three weeks...then I'll force myself into the pool and onto the bike! Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Ted: Tough decision. One thing to consider is that the power meter market is kind of in flux right now, with Stages having produced a good PM for $700 and 4iiii bringing one to market for $400. Buy a used Powertap might still make sense now, but I wanted to make sure you knew about those developments.

Jim: I have two season planning questions for you. I've done eight weeks of prep now and am going to do three more building a bit of volume, then 12 weeks of base, 4 of build, 2 peak, and 1 race. One thing I'm wondering about is building volume in the Going Long pattern (10-12-13.5, 10.5-12.5-14, 11-13.5-15) vs. the Be Ironfit pattern (10-11-12, 12-13-14, 14-15-16). The other is about when to introduce muscular endurance sessions and how they change over the season. Do you have general thoughts on that? I'm happy to talk about what I see as my specific limiters and put it in context of my season if that makes it easier to discuss. Thanks!

I had similar questions about build volume and such when I started training in December.  Fortunately in my case I have tried several different marathon plans over the past 7 years and knew which ones I liked and which ones I didn't like.  I made my triathlon plan follow my favorite Marathon plan in terms of building a base, building endurance, and tapering.

Runners World had an article a few years back in which they asked a couple dozen elite American Marathon runners what their training plan was and then compared what each had done to qualify for the USA Olympic Marathon Qualifying race.  They concluded after looking at everyone's plan that there was not a single formula for training but rather dozens of training plans that were spread out all over the map.  Some were running 100+ miles a week, some were running less than 40 miles a week.  Some would do long runs every other week, some would do long runs every 3rd week.  Some used a 6-8 weeks training plan other used 4-5 month training plans, etc.  

The simpler the plan the better for me.  I like the plan so simple that I can memorize the whole plan from day 1 to race day and not rely on looking at a chart every day to figure out what I am supposed to be doing that day.  So if I were you I would use the 10-11-12, 12-13-14, 14-15-16 plan.  With one mile increases you will always know what is next.  They are also easy to measure. I raced for many many years with out a GPS.  One city that I was in had mile markers on my running trail so I could easily get my splits and know how far I had run.  Half miles made it difficult to know distance and splits.  A GPS running watch has been a fun toy for me, but whole numbers are still easier to work with for me than fractional miles because my watch record all my miles splits.  

If you can reducing the stress of planning the workout you will probably find that you have a better mind set and focus during the workout resulting in a better work out.  Better workouts will make a bigger difference that +/- 1 mile here or there will do.

I am not sure what muscular endurance means, but I know that it take 2-3 weeks for for the body to fully repair itself so the last heavy weight training should be 2-3 week before a race.   I am sure others can give more specifics on weight training.  For me the "endurance cycle"  is where I am at my peak volume.  I do low miles during the week (5 miles a day running) and long miles on the weekend (18-22 miles runs) one week alternating with long miles during the week (8 miles a day) followed by short miles on the weekend (12 miles).  The last long run (22 miles) is three weeks prior to the race to allow time for the body to rebuild itself before race day.

Been feeling under the weather for the last few days...more in sinuses than anything...what are your thoughts of continuing training or simply resting for a few days? I am only in week 2 of the 20 weeks Half IM program which is in my opinion yes, to build base but more importantly, be consistent...

Sometimes a day or two off can go a long way. If you are really honest with yourself, you will know what to do.  Maybe cut back on the intensity or time and keep the workouts short - just to establish routine,etc.  

I have had those workouts where I was just struggling and my heart rate was high, etc.  and I go back the next day to slog it out, only to end up sick...and look back and say "ah, yes...I was getting sick".    But then sometimes I have just felt a bit run down and some extra rest helps.  

So anyway, my advice is clear as mud I am just trying to avoid work.

Hey guys … hope everyone's training is going well. Really getting heavy into TTT training already.

My thoughts … and this is what I hear from coaches and elites … work on the engine first then get the toys. So work on getting stronger and faster on the bike then spend the money later on a bike. So from that standpoint I like the power meter idea. I have a 2013/2014 P2. Not the top of the line, but then outfitted over the last few years with race wheels and just got a power meter. We are finding out so much with my power stats since I never had it before. I went with a the crank based power meter Quarq Elsa (more expensive my coach recommended). I like the crank based because you can always change out pedals and wheels with no issues. Stages (as mentioned) makes a really good 1 sided crank based meter for about $700-800. I originally bought the Garmin Vectors, but returned because I did not like the look pedals and we could never get any of the watch or edge to sync up.

I also got a Garmin Edge 500 off ebay pretty cheap that I love.

I am told not to bother with an aero helmet unless you are 19-20 mph regularly. Also, if you are a heavy sweater and need the cooling of a regular helmet that may affect too. Lazer Tardiz makes a helmet the allows you to dump water on the top and it streams through the helmet. Many other do not have cooling.

The cooling is a real thing, the speed thing is actually counter intuitive as aerodynamic advantages are scaled larger to slower riders than they are to faster riders, because the drag does not increase linear with speed. Faster riders will gain more SPEED than slower riders, but slower riders will save more TIME overall, not in the least because they are on the course longer.

To give an example with fictional numbers:

Rider A goes 40km/h (~25mph) on a 40 km course. He goes 60 minutes. Aero goodies are saving him two km/h, so now he goes 42km/h, and the course takes him 57:09, saving him 2 minutes 51 seconds.

Rider B goes 32 km/h (~20mph) on the same 40 km course. He goes 1:15. The aero goodies save him only 1.5km/h because he experiences less drag due to his lower speed, thus the goodies result in less drag savings as a result. He now goes 33.5km/h, and the course takes him 1:11:39, saving him 3 minutes 21 seconds, 30 seconds more than the faster rider.

There's a good Cervelo article that explains it a bit better with some real world differences I think, but this example covers it somewhat I think.

Just got a set of Sram S60-s, will test it on saturday, see if there is a difference in feel and statistics, came a mixed set of Giant P-SLR1 (which is quite light) on front and Shimano WH-R500 rear. Although the tyres might bring a difference as well, the new ones are Specialized Pro Turbo

So I decided to change up my B & C races and now am doing a 1/3 and a 1/2 distance race... The half is 6 weeks before the full and I know I need to ensure it stays a training race. I also plan on wearing my wetsuit regardless of temperature (obviously as long as it's less than 85 degF) - Is this a smart move or I should I swim without a wetsuit??

Thanks for having me as part of the group! Just to give an update...I just fought through some new IT band issues that were causing a little impediment to my running. Not enough to keep me from doing it, but enough to where I noticed it. I met with a Physical Therapist a few times and he has me back on the right track. Just finishing up a rest week, then the build begins!

Unfortunately, the first A race of the season for me will be a no go. I recently got a new job, which is great, but I lost some of my personal time. So traveling for this race isn't possible. The downside is that I can't find any races in my area at that same time, so it throws my training off. I'm going to add a July race though as a B, so I'll keep on my schedule so that my season peaks for the Chicago Tri.

Had a question though about indoor bike training videos. I'm stuck inside for a little while still with the bad weather, and I just purchased a new CycleOps bike trainer in the last week, which I have really enjoyed using so far. Do any of you know of any good free bike training videos? I've seen a few on YouTube (specifically from Global Cycling Network), but I wasn't sure if there were some other good options. Sadly at this point, spending money on them is out of the question.

Glad to hear that everyone is getting ready for race season!

STORY: I'm a 27 year old educational researcher that loves making lists and goals (and then crossing things off!). This year I started my list of 101 things in 1001 days and doing a half-ironman is one of my items. I grew up as a competitive swimmer, swam in college (two shoulder surgeries) and started to road bike a lot then too. A friend needed a running buddy after her original buddy sprained her ankle for a half-marathon and without being a runner (literally never ran as training or working out) I practiced for two weeks and did a half-marathon with her. Two years ago my New Year's resolution was to run the Chicago marathon and two weeks later I woke up with multiple herniated discs so walking and recovering from that became my resolution. I tried for the marathon again last year, but in Denver, and started training and loved it! I got up to running 20 miles in training and felt great (wish I had just kept going 6 more miles) but ended up getting tendonitis in my right knee. I tried to keep training but knew that I could ignore it and then be done after race day or rest and back-off and be better off in the long run. Anyways, I'm feeling great and love to workout and love all three disciplines separately so this year I decided to put them together and get into triathlons! I have never done one and I tend to just jump right in; I am signed up for the half IM in Santa Cruz in September.

FAMILY STATUS: I am married and have a puppy!

CURRENT TRAINING: I really love to workout; I usually do a small thing in the morning and then in the afternoons go between spin, a run, or strength training and am now trying to add some swims. I ordered about 10 books from Amazon (found used copies for about $2-$3 each) and am picking a plan from Mark Fitzgerald's Week-by-Week guide. I am playing with the idea of including some strength training as well (I really like the TRX, plyometric stuff). I am looking at a rather heavy, intensive plan but am really looking forward to it.

RACES: I hope to dabble in a sprint and maybe an Olympic distance tri. in the summer as training for the half IM in Santa Cruz in mid-Sept.

Weight Loss goals: I am looking to drop about 10lbs but it is not a primary concern.

What will make me a good mentee: Well, like someone else wrote in their introduction - once I decided to do something I order ton of books and learn as much as I can and now I would really appreciate help in putting it all together and applying it and making this all happen!

Unless me wearing a wetsuit disqualifies me from AG placing (due to water temp rules) I ALWAYS wear a wetsuit.  Unless you are a former competitive swimmer there is no reason not to wear a wetsuit.  It is simply faster.

I don't know of any good FREE videos.  I would check out a trainerroad.com membership.
