2 | Subject: Buying TT bike- help please! Hello! I`m writing to ask you a favor. I`m buying TT bike, for triathlon of course, and I`ve found very interesting one. Price is good, bike too, but I`ve got one small problem. It is written of its frame, that it`s Kestrel bike. I`ve been looking through their page and I cannot find this model. Seller says, that he bought it without asking about model (had been used before by someone) and he didn`t know what model was it. Yesterday I wrote to Kestler Bikes, they responded me that it looks like old Kestler but they are not sure. What do you think? The frame is very characteristic, do you recognize it? Is it Kestrel or not but repainted? http://img17.olx.pl/images_tablicapl/203815615_1_644x461_czasowy-ke... http://img18.olx.pl/images_tablicapl/203815615_4_644x461_czasowy-ke... |

That looks similar to an OLD Kestrel 4000 - see the picture below (probably wasn't called a 4000 when that bike was made). It would concern me that Kestrel does not instantly recognize the bike. If it were theirs, different colors or not, they should say, "Yep, that's one of ours." For the record, you can get a new Kestrel Talon set up as a TT bike for less than $1,500.

Pro 5892 , New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Buying TT bike- help please! It looks like a VERY old Kestrel. I bet that is at least 20 yrs old by now… Unless you're REALLY strapped for cash (i.e. this things is dirt cheap), you can do much better than that. It's not that aerodynamic (bet it's not even close to most modern road frames…) and you'll have a bunch of issues maintaining old components like this… Keep in mind that you need to factor in the cost of new cables, brake pads, chain, cassette and chain rings when you buy a really old bike… many times, you will need to replace those. By the time all is said and done, you've probably added more in component cost than what you paid for it. |

2 | Subject: RE: Buying TT bike- help please! Thanks for advices!!! Tommorow I`m going to see it. Here it is what Kestrel has responded me: ,,Hi Jacub, Thanks for contacting Kestrel Bicycles! This does indeed appear to be a legit Kestrel Bike however it was made before our company, Advanced Sports International, purchased the brand in 2007. You may have some luck with the independently run website www.bikepedia.com. From the frame design it is most likely a Talon or RT frame. Best, Kestrel Bikes." So it may really be an old Kestrel. |
