I'm in too, I was about to get my new tribike for this course but apparently I don't need that.... I wish I choose an easier course for my firsts IM but ....

In your opinion do I need aero bike on my road bike or can I still do a decent job without that? How long can you stay in aero position on this course ?

Thanks

If your aero bars slows you down at climbing cause of the extra weight you can leave them home. if you climb at the same speed with or without keep them and you will enjoy the flat part and some down hill on them.

I'm also curious to hear about more on this topic. I have a road bike with aerobars and a tri bike...but I did the HIM at Muskoka last year and had one hell of a time on the bike spending way too long out of the bars (and had major arm/shoulder pain).

What types of cassettes should be used? and should we bother with tri bikes if we have a road bike option?

I only have a tri bike, so that is the bike of choice. I did change out my cassette to a 11-28, with a normal 53/39 front ring. I looked at going with a compact crankset, but my Quarq is older and the bolt pattern would not work. I originally had a 11-25, but opted for a bit more climbing gears. A friend of mine did the 70.3 on the same setup, but he did run out of gears a few times. Just keep an eye on your power and keep your cadence high going up the hills.

I just got settled into my condo at Deerhurst after hitting the grocery store. Who else is in town and ready to race? Looks like it is going to be good temperatures for racing, with a slight chance of rain.

Well, that was an interesting race. The swim was good. That bike course is crazy. There were 3 climbs where I thought for sure I would fall over and start rolling back down hill. I was going 6 km/hr. But, then my max speed was 77 km/hr. It was a never ending roller coaster of climbing and descending. And the run was tough as well. A lot of climbing and the sun came out and it get very hot. Freaking huge finishers medal though.

really hard race, I don't know what was harder, if the bike or the run??? cause both were tough

But it was such a nice race, volunteers were the best, I guess everyone didn't run as they wanted cause they were toast after the bike...

even though I am super happy with my bike PR...I will never do the full there again just because of the bike. It was an emotional first IM and I walked 75% of the marathon, but I got it! Awesome job, by the way!

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?
