What I didn't do in 2014 is get picked for some Ben guy's training scholarship...haaaa, kidding! What I didn't do well in 2014 is take enough rest days.  At 44 I have to be a bit kinder to my body if I want to continue with this tri lifestyle for years to come.  I will have to find that balance as I'll begin Ironman training in January.  I welcome the challenge and am totally excited, but I also know it will be a long haul and I'll need to listen to this body of mine!

Look in the mentor groups daily, my group should be up soon, throwing a fun interactive twist into the mentor group this time around.

Not a very happy year for me. Didn't make any of my goals. I wanted to qualify for 70.3 WC and crashed in that race. Wanted to qualify for WC AG champs for chi-town and a guy crashes into me there. I made some gains in running and set some PR's in running. Bike and swim stayed about the same. It was a happy year though, since we had our second child and that cut out a lot of training.

My wife says I'm not allowed to race in Wisconsin anymore due too always having a bike issues there lol.

For 2015 I am going back to school to finish getting my A.S. degree online, so not sure it will be a big race year for me. I really want to tackle a full IM again in 2016 though and really devote myself to training and see what results I can get.

I did not keep a training log. With nothing longer than Oly, I didn't need to because I could still finish fairly high in local races. This year, I have signed up for two HIMs, so a log is necessary.
Also, last year I kept saying that I was going to strength train, but wouldn't stick with it and would just flounder around, lacking focus. I started seeing a personal trainer once a week two weeks ago (I lift once or twice a week on my own as well). I signed up for 10 weeks, which should give me a good strength training foundation that I can build on.

What I did in 2014 that I will change in 2015:

  • no matter the group pace, do not speed up on an unfamiliar road
  • do not go for an "easy" group ride when you're new to the group, do not know what "easy" means to them
  • do not load up heavy tri training in week one and think my reflexes weren't impaired

result: week one of tri training culminated with a bike fall at 25 mph, separated AC shoulder joint, and deep road rash

  • no more chi running

result: 3rd bout of achilles tendonitis in 9 years

Net season: after 10 years of triathlon, did a swim leg for a oly relay race but no individual races

For 2015:

  • working with running gait specialist to change my form to be kinder on my achilles
  • working with a training to strengthen my glutes, back, shoulder flexibility to improve my biomechanics
  • while recovering from achilles, gave hatha yoga another try; will continue hatha yoga once/week to put my body back together

One word sums up what I did not do in 2014 and what I will be focusing on in 2015. CONSISTENCY! Keep the training nice and consistent each week.

Do not just go with the training plan. I picked one that fit my running and swimming abilities, but was too much for my running abilities. I could have adjusted it at the beginning and had a much happier race season.

This was my first year of triathlon, decided at the start of 2014 to do one and see how I went, and ended up doing 4 before winter, all pretty slowly!

I was determined to smash my times, improves heaps of winter. Instead, I got hit by lack of motivation and desire. I think I set my goals too high and they weren't achievable or measurable, and this led to it. Also stopped swimming completely for about 2 months, which I hated, because once I am actually in the pool, I love swimming.

So this year, I will set high goals, but goals within reach. Am also planning to do more stuff over winter (trail runs, mountain bike) to keep me going. Luckily here in Australia, winter is still 5 months away or so

Also, consistancly. Whilst I learnt this in 2014, I need to be consistent across all 3 sports. I was pretty flat leading up to a half marathon, but kept running 5-15km each week, and finished better than I thought I would. In contrast, my brother was running very intermittently, and suffered because of it.

I learned in 2014 that training for an Ironman is a long and time consuming endeavor!

I learned that not doing any strength training while training for IM and other races contributed to my perceived "Skinny Fat" body. In shape but not as muscular as I would like to be.

2015- I am only signed up for 2 triathlons (Oly relay with Tri Club members and a sprint) and a half marathon as of now. This year will be focusing on building my strength, enjoying time with my wife and sleeping in during the week! I want to focus on general health and wellness and do Tri/Running for fun and not so serious. I think that 2014 taught me that I can accomplish anything I put my mind too and that finishing an IM is a great life experience. This year, I just want to enjoy my social life a bit and get strong again.

Not sure. I felt my training went very well in 2014--very consistent across all three sports except for a few weeks here and there due to freak injuries, illness, and pool closures--but my race results really didn't reflect all the hard work. I really feel like I've hit a plateau in all three sports. Don't know if it's due to aging (I'm 45) or if there's some other issue like recovery, overtraining (given other demands on my time and energy) or never quite getting taper right. I feel like I have faster races in me but for my two main races this year I was sick (#1) and injured (#2) and barely broke my PB, twice. I'm not sure I can attribute the injuries/illness to overtraining as it was the only time I was sick all year and most of my students were sick at that time, and the two injuries were not oveuse ones but accidents, Keep wondering what I could do if I ever got to a race in one piece!

I guess I will continue to try to be consistent in training but maybe will experiment with doing a bit less volume, since it doesn't seem to make much difference, particularly for the run. Maybe look more at the polarized model of things--long and easy or short and hard, not so much mid-range stuff. Feel like I would really benefit from coaching but it would be difficult from here.

What will be different--I can stop blaming my bike for my slow splits. I now am the proud owner of a Cervelo P2 so no excuses!

I did not swim enough, that has already changed. I've put in more pool time since the beginning of December than I did all last year.
I did not do a 70.3. I will this year.

This is a good one... and one I've thought a lot about. I've been doing a post mortem for 2014.

What I will do:

-swim more: I basically learned to swim again in 2014. I knew how to swim in general before, but made huge strides once I switched to doing masters swims 3x a week. Unfortunately, I didn't do that until July, 7 weeks before my big race for the year. I'm keeping that up.

-bike intervals/spinning: My biking overall consisted a lot of hill climbing or completely flat rides. Very little variance in intensity. I need to switch that up... even on the trainer

-more trail running: I missed doing that in 2014

-an Olympic length tri.

What I won't do (in 2015):

-stress out nearly as much about missed workouts
-another IM. I did IMMT and had the time of my life. But the training committment was a bit higher than I expected, so I'm backing off a bit. Once my kids are a bit older, I'll do it again. The desire is there, but the timing isn't right

I usually have at least one workout per day, sometimes two or three, but I spend about all in-between time eating. I am not gaining weight, but I am not losing weight either. Should I be concerned?

I'm going to let you in on how to get faster by doing nothing. Well, not exactly nothing, but you won't have to raise your heart rate, put out 300 watts, or really even break a sweat.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"
