Hi all - I will be making a new road bike purchase in 2015 and just wanted to get some quick thoughts. There is a big bike sale coming up, with discounts on excess 2014 models which are all marked down. However, I've been reading a lot about how good the new Shimano 105 5800 11-speed groupset is and it will only be on 2015 models (and going forward).

So my internal debate is - do I pay more for a 2015 model with the 105 5800 groupset or is my money better invested in a slightly better 2014 bike frame? Say I'm planning to spend about $2,500 - 3,000 either way. Is the new groupset that much better that it's worth skipping a sale? Thank you in advance for your feedback!

$2.5-3K price range would bring in quite a few models with Ultegra, especially if you shop around a bit and don't mind last years model (which was 11 speed).

Personally, I would pay a bit extra to get the new 105 over the old… not that the old one was bad, but the new 11 speed is really spectacular. Although I would rather have Ultegra… :-)

The cost for any marginal technical advancements does not justify buying a 2015 mid-range bike. More bang for the buck on the 2014 models. The money saved could be better used for a 2nd different cassette, second crank, Q-rings, a bike fit, better wheels, heart rate monitor, or indoor trainer. These items focus on the engine, which makes up a greater portion of the system, and stands the greatest chance of improving (basic systems analysis rule).

I was thinking the same thing.  OP, you can get a lot of bike for that kind of money, especially if you look at last year's model in the big sale you reference coming up.

Thank you all for the feedback. Part of me gets lost in the marketing ("20% stiffer and lighter!") and makes me feel like 2014 models are already falling behind but I definitely get the value proposition.

I may shoot to fall on the lower end of my budget and if it comes with Ultegra that would be a bonus. To Six000MileYear's point, I plan to get a bike fit and should invest any extra money on the personal improvement side of the equation.

Start with a bike fit though and then get the bike that fits... by far the best way to buy a bike and by far the best investment in speed you can make!

Running does not cause injury. Poor running form does. Running is more enjoyable, and safer if you know what you’re doing. And yes, even old dogs can learn new tricks.
