The short answer would be that my HR tends to correlate very well to RPE.  I would have been fine letting my HR drift high and race by power early on if it didn't feel so hard, I wasn't huffing and puffing, shoulders weren't rocking, etc.

The race had someone pick the bIke up and the friend that I drove up with drove my car home, while wendy came up to meet me here (about 1.5 hours from home) This was sort of my worst nightmare come true, as it w as my first true crash on blood thinners. I basically vaulted over the bike and my head hit the ground pretty hard so I was trying not to freak out about the possibility of a brain bleed.

Well see. I broke most of the ribs on my left side and, while I've been through worse pain, never this constant. Plus this morning I had the first "where am I and why am I in so much pain" wake ups. Running a bit of a fever so unless thst breaks looks like I might be riding the gurney a bit longer.

Chris, aka Gurney Rider, hopefully youre tracking to discharge soon. Not sure if you've broken ribs or clavicle before but a recliner might be really useful when you get home. (medical supply stores rent them) It will make sleeping much more comfortable for the first few weeks.

Funny you mention that. I am here for another night but my wife did call to have a rental recliner delivered tomorrow so it's there ehen we get there. Hopefully tomorrow. And just when I think im over the pain it comes back in.a big wave. Looks like I'm out of commission for 6-8 weeks. Probably not feasible to maintain any kind of fitness, but ideas on how not to revert to total newbie status?

The fitness will return. Eating and sleeping well will help. They'll discharge you with orders for local ortho f/u. Let him/her guide you on when to push and when to rest. I'd try to get into PT asap. Assuming you're on opioids - and will be for at least a few das post discharge - I'd also suggest picking up some Miralax or other mild laxative. Pain meds can cause some miserable constipation but they'll help you sleep. Good luck! Hoping it's a discharge kind of day today.

Tab did a ton of walking with the dogs.  She also borrowed a recumbent stationary bike that her Mom happened to have and used that until her shoulder could tolerate her bike on the trainer.  Once she was back on the bike, while her fitness and power numbers were down, they jumped back up pretty quickly.

I am so very sorry to read about this, Chris.
I would focus on your health, and returning to being reasonably active before considering your fitness.

Glad you are alive. You will heal and get through this. Triathletes love challenges.

The recliner is a good idea, but didn't help me much after my accident. I didn't have a PTX with that ordeal, but did with the rib fx a few years earlier. Fortunately a colleague gave me a nerve block which really helped for a few days.
Talk to your doctor about that possibility.

I hope you feel better soon, but more likely a more reasonable goal is just to feel OK and not hurt to breathe.
I'm sending healing vibes out to you, 'cuz I believe in it.

LOL. well, the chest tube is out. It's about 1:30 here but opting to stay one more night just to make sure things still work. I imagine that my return to activity will depend on pain management. Getting some good drugs though. Thankfully I don't have a lot of race fees tied up in the next three months to lose, just a 2 mile swim at $45.

<p>Dang, Chris - you shoulda crashed a long time ago - it got Kim, Dale, and Neil to come out of the shadows and re-join the family - ha-ha! Seriously you all - great to hear from you. How is your training and season coming along?

Chris, you know that I am always a big fan of just walking, when all else fails you can count on the time time you have spent on your feet. I got out and did a brisk one hour walk to warm up and then finally (FINALLY!)  after 4.5 weeks I ran super easy for 20 minutes. Hip flexor was a little tight at first especially on the uphills, but after about 5 minutes it loosened up and was ok. Warmed down well with another 15 minutes of walking. will see how it feels later today, but fingers crossed.

The elbow (pun alert) on the other hand seems to be going in the wrong direction, still manageable but I cannot imagine swimming more than twice a week on it, which ain't gonna cut it. My doc has reccomended that I consider a combination of Tenotomy and PRP injections so probably going to get a consult set up with a specialist in those procedures next week. Anybody in the group ever gone that route? Interested to find out what the recovery time is and what that would mean for the rest of the season  - basically should I just do it now and get it over with or wait till fall.

He was probably cold...LOL.  I weigh like 30 pounds more than he does and it was around 60ish at that point.

I wonder where his threshold HR is at. This was late in his ride too. 341 weighted for over 3 hrs.

And basically everyone high up on this is likely to have such help. Pretty wide open farm land there. I had kind of a diagonal tailwind. Someone like Giuliano is very fast, but he's not *that* slick!

I had one of my worst rides in recent memory.  It was really hot and humid...and you know youre in trouble when your HR is higher than your power.  i was seriously having doubts on whether I could finish the ride safely.  With 15 miles to go and reel feel going over 100 I just said screw it and found a water spigot and basically took a bath dumping gallons of water over myself.  it kind of worked though as my HR dropped about 20-25 bpm the rest of the way home. Combination of an off day, a really long route, and tough conditions.

I had a decent ride yesterday -- hot and humid conditions, but still a pretty decent ride.  Unfortunately, my Garmin managed to lose the data, so I have no proof that I actually did the ride.  Thankfully I happened to look at the stats before I turned my computer off, so I was able to recreate it in TP and Golden Cheetah.

Yesterday was my three year anniversary since being hit.  Every year, I make it a point to ride on the 4th of July, so it's a bit of a bummer to lose that ride file since it does have some significance to me.  Oh well, I know that I did it, so it counts this time
