Subject: Road bikes used in ITU races?
While on the trainer I've been watching some old race coverage on YouTube. I watched coverage of a draft-legal OLY distance race and noticed that all the bikes I saw had drop bars and not a single bike had tri bars. It also looked to me that the geometry of the bikes were more like road bikes rather than TT or tri geometry. Was I seeing this correctly? As background I think the race was London 2013 or 2014 (ITU race?)

Tri bikes not allowed in ITU draft-legal racing.  You were seeing road bikes.

Aerobars or tri-bikes are not allowed in ITU. They do have shorter bars that they can rest their arms on but they generally don't use them when in the peleton.

The bike is so much easier, because all they do is draft.

Maybe easier on the legs, heart, and lungs but a little tougher on the ribs and collar bones, I guess it's all relative.

Thanks for the explanation.

Triathletes should learn how to handle their bikes...

That's exactly right.

And.....when they go down like that at 30 mph it's hard on the parents too.

Amazingly, 11 kids ended up down in that wreck and only 1 broken wrist out of it.

I wouldn't say "all they do is draft", but there certainly is lots of drafting, teams even use domestiques to pull the runners through. It's a different type of racing - I wouldn't say its any easier, in many ways its harder. Just a different skill set, with an emphasis on bike handling skills and the ability to make surges to attack or catch any breakaways.

Riding in a peleton is by no means "easier" unless you are fitter than the rest of the peleton :p

Locally I was great at the weekly time trials, but would get spat out the back of every crit race, it was my goal for one summer to stay til the end of the race in the main pack for the first time.

They're drafting sure, which allows them to go faster, but they are still pushing hard, and there tends to be more up and down, trying to stop breakaways, closing gaps, if you're at the back of it, you tend to have to keep goin hard to keep up as the group comes together, separates a little, making you possibly burn your matches sooner, and not having them for the run.

It was a great experience learning to ride with these guys!
