Subject: Best Weight Scale
I am trying to get back into the swing of things. I have put on about 50 pounds since I did my last IM in 2012. Life has gotten in the way I went back to old bad habits. Time to get back on track, lose this weight and get healthy and happy. I had a digital scale I bought from walmart but it didn't last two years. What has everyone been using and had success with.

Sounds like we're similar path. I last did a TRI in 2009 then got lazy and put on about 70 pounds. Not training and eating like you still are is a VERY bad combination. Started back up in December.

I got a Withings Body Analyzer about 4 months ago. It's a bit pricy (about $150) but worth it. Weight is exact, body fat % is not but it's consistent so you can use it to compare day to day. WIFI connected (I connect it to MyFitnessPal for logging). Step on the scale, it updates the weight, and hits the app which defines the calories you eat.

I don't have long term experience but so far it's probably the most flawless piece of technology I've every purchased. It just works.

I've got the Withings as well.  As noted above, the %Fat isn't real accurate- I think your hydration level really affects it.  But the weight part is spot on.  Best part is that it automatically uploads everything and you get to see a nice chart.  Otherwise it's really hard to keep track of trends.  I'll easily swing 4 lbs in a day.

I use the scale to give me a good idea of my hydration level.

Add another vote for the Withings analyzer. I've had one for about 4 years now and it's been great. Never a problem.

I also have a withings and i love it. Ive had it for a couple years now. I always weigh in the morning to try and help keep the body fat measure as consistant as i can, but its really not great. Then again no scale does body fat well

How does the body fat analysis work? Is it based on the BMI charts doctors use?

I have a Weight Watchers scale...not sure how exact it is. I go to the WW meetings and get weighed in there too...I'll weigh myself before a meeting and the WW scale usually reads me 2-3 lbs heavier. I'm guessing because those scales are probably a bit more high tech than the scale I bought 8 years ago for $40 USD. But just goes to show that scales vary!

This is a pretty good summary of how they work . In general these are better for looking for trends of where your body fat is going rather than getting an absolute value from the scale. The Withings scale also provides BMI but I ignore that number
