Im sure this has been discussed before but i havent been able to find a thread on it. Im looking for some reviews on ironman's 6 month training plan. Im starting training in the next few weeks and this plan just seems a little too "light" Has anyone used this and what were the results?

While it will depend largely on your goals I would say that volume will get you to the finish line. It is roughly the same volume I put in for my IM and I finished in 15:13. My goal was sub 14 hours but the heat beat me down and I spent the last 25 miles on the bike dry heaving. Then almost 25 minutes in transition trying to hydrate and convince myself to go back out and finish.

it seems a little to "figure it out on your own" for me in many ways. Just running for an hour is something I could come up with.

For my 1st IM, I used a BT plan and I think it was a good plan.

I'll second this - used the free plan on here and it got me to the finish in reasonably good shape!

I used Open Tri's free plan for three IM's and really enjoyed it. I really liked the detailed bike trainer and swim workouts that made the time go by a lot faster.

Rob, Be Iron Fit has several excellent first IM plans. It's also a solid resource on IM and tri training. I used a modification of it (longer midweek bike, no high intensity work) to an 11:07 first IM.

I actually saw this a few months ago and thought the "6 months out" and "5 months out" pieces looked like great ways to build and maintain my base. So the first two months of my "plan" are their first two months. After that I'm switching to a customized plan I had built for me a few years ago.

It's hard to say how much "more" it is, since my plan progresses and is very specific (and I'd have to do a lot of math to come up with that answer), but for me, topping the longest run out at 2 hours as stated in the Ironman brand plan would not be enough. It might be for someone else though.

I agree with this.  I know how much time I have each day to train.  What I would want is a plan that tells me the best way to utilize that time.  Do I do some hard 3 min intervals during my 1 hr bike?  How about some tempo?  Should I just Z2 it for recovery?  Those are the type of things that I expect in a plan.

I have the traithlete training bible at home i will open it up and read that. Also most likely order the ironfit book in the next few days. I looked at the free plan from BT and it seems decent but the more i think about it im going to have to create my own plan that is oriented more towards my work and life. Plus i need to get my running up which is shockling bad right now.

Have you looked at the BT plans developed by Mike Ricci?

I had good experience and support from Mike and highly recommend.

There are a lot of flavors to an Iron distance taper plan. Do you reduce the volume, the frequency or both? This article will go over some tried-and-true taper plans.

Using a high-volume schedule for many months is not the best tactic. Build speed and skill several months out, and then transition to a high-volume IM plan.

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
