What does alternate 1x1000 mean?

Does that come after some other instruction? For example, if it says 1x1500 (alternate 1x1000), that would mean if the 1500 is too much, just do 1000?

Thats swimmer shorthand for swimming 1000m straight.

It could be something like this:

20x50, 20 repeats of 50 metres (or yards). Usually swimmers use a fixed send off interval.

So a set on the white board might read like this:


20x50 @ 1.10

You swim 20 50s and leave every 1 minute and 10 seconds. So if I swim 35 seconds I rest for 35, swim 45 then you only get 25, etc.

Swimming 1000 straight in training as your whole session will not help you improve very quickly.

'Alternate' means that if you aren't up to the full workout (1500), shorten it up and do the 1000.
