Comments: I ran a mile in a different indoor race a year ago in 8:38; I didn't really know what tme to expect except that it should be better than that. I vaguely hoped for 8:00 but doubted it. My strategy was to run by HR: 140 to 144 (zone 4) for the first half-mile, then kick it into zone 5 after that. I feel I accomplished that. I'm very pleased with my even splits & with my HR progression. My maximum HR in each of the last 4 laps was 149, which is 94% of maximum. so I don't really think I could have run much harder. Maybe a wee bit. It was exciting to watch and cheer some amazing runners. There was the 63 year old woman who did 6:13, an age-graded score of 95.99. There were an 80-year old and a 74-year old in the race, the women I beat. All of these women are very inspiring. (My age-graded score was 76.69%) What would you do differently?: I didn't train for this race at all. I have been training for my half-marathon which is in 4 weeks, so I have been doing mostly distance work. This race was lots of fun and I'd do it again, but I'll have to see what I'm doing next year and if I can train for it specifically. Post race
Warm down: Ran easy just 5/8 mile, then did Myrtle routine, plus rolling and static stretching. Watched the elite races. What limited your ability to perform faster: I didn't really train for it, although I have been doing lots of running.. Last updated: 2014-12-10 12:00 AM

Race day for me means CAFFEINE! Since I've given it up, I find that 3 cups of 1/3 caff-2/3 decaf really gets me ramped. I also had a breakfast of oatmeal, plain yogurt & a few raisins at about 6 am, and had time for my usual 25 minutes of tai chi..
I love race days. I never feel more alive and happy, and it's not just the caffeine. So I arrived at the venue singing along in the car to Stevie Wonder, a bit too early as usual.
After chatting with some running friends old & new, I did my cannonball warm up, then at 9:23 I started running. I ran 2 3/8 miles at a slow pace, then 4 x ( 26" fast for about 100 meters, 125 meters slow). Then I walked around some more, ate a Hammer gel for the CAFFEINE, and did my SR standard warm up routine because I didn't want to tighten up.
The race started at 10:50.
