Veteran 1384 Panama City, FL | Subject: RE: Escape Ft. Desoto 4/11 I did this race couple years ago (my race report is filed on BT) and I really enjoyed it. It happened to be wetsuit legal that year. Very pretty state park and water. A well run race IMO. |

Regular 226 Saint Petersburg, FL | Subject: RE: Escape Ft. Desoto 4/11 Usually well attended. I've done the last 4 years. The swim can be interesting depending on weather. Also can be a pretty long jog to T1. Flat ride, inside loop of Ft. Desoto park so really safe. Run out is in sand and back on bike path. Shouldn't be too hot, but again it's Florida. All levels of athletes from beginner to high level with good support. Enjoy it. |

Expert 1051 Bradenton, Florida | Subject: RE: Escape Ft. Desoto 4/11 I'm in again. Great race. Usually wetsuit legal although not necessary for the short distance. However, a lot of people use this as a trial run for St. Anthony's, so you'll see a bunch of wetsuits if its cold enough. Last year the swim was relocated and shortened because of heavy surf in the Gulf. The RD will try to make sure you get a triathlon in that morning. The transition area is rough. Old asphalt parking lot that is showing it's age and the effects of the Florida sun. Bike is nice, but can be challenging depending on the direction of the wind. Run is out on a multi-use path, stairs up to the top of the fort, ramp on the way down, then beach/service road/path on the way back. The slower you are in the swim and bike, the more the run path gets chewed up. The later you start, the softer the sand, the slower you go. Overall it is a great event and very well run. Below are my race reports from previous years if you need more details. http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid... http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid... Good luck and if you see a large (6'5" and 275 lbs.) guy in a purple and yellow RYDER BIKES kit, say hi. |

All the race reports I've read have really fast people. |

Expert 1244 | Subject: RE: Escape Ft. Desoto 4/11 it is an absolute blast of a course in my opinion. Very beautiful, there are def a lot of fast people who do it, but there are also average and slow people. I think this bike is one of the better bike course because you constantly see people so you stay motivated to push harder. DO it |

Expert 1051 Bradenton, Florida | Subject: RE: Escape Ft. Desoto 4/11 I have to agree that it"s a great race, otherwise I wouldn't have done it multiple times. It's a great venue, closed bike course, very well run, and unique in that you get to run up and over the fort as part of the race. There's no reason not to sign up for this event. |

10 | Subject: RE: Escape Ft. Desoto 4/11 Though I haven't done this one of the series yet (likely will this year), my wife has. Any race at DeSoto is awesome, since the park is closed while the race is in progress. All the races in the series have significant first timer turnout, but plenty of fast folks also. These are very well run races. Like said before, no reason not to do it |

New user 40 | Subject: RE: Escape Ft. Desoto 4/11 Thank you. I signed up. And then I realized I wasn't going to be in the 3rd wave, I'd be in the 7th. Yikes. I'm more than a little nervous about this race. It's my first race back after pregnancy and I haven't been open water swimming or cycling outside in, well, too long. Yikes. |

Glad you caved to the peer pressure! Don't stress about the waves, They usually only leave a few minutes between each. I think they split it up more than really necessary to limit the number of people reaching the stairs at the same time. The good thing is with a later wave start, there should be no one chasing you down and swimming over you and the road is closed for the bike leg. Congrats on getting back into tris after a baby. |

Veteran 1384 Panama City, FL | Subject: RE: Escape Ft. Desoto 4/11 The waves are quick and they go off fast. Very reasonable so you are not swimming with more than a few dozen people at a time to start with. Swim is usually parallel to beach and was nice during the event I did in 2013. |
