Subject: Bike: do I go for better components or better frame quality
I am new to triathalon and am looking at buying my first road bike. I am looking at a Felt ZW5 2013 model ( carbon frame, but only shimano integra), and the Merida ride Juliet 94 (2014 model) which has the better shimano components - 105 but the frame isn't as good - carbon forks only. The felt is going for a very good price because it is the the 2013 model and the 2014 model has shimano 105... Both are the same price. What do seasoned cyclists think.

My 2c

105 is better than tiagra ( I assume you meant that and not ultegra ) by enough that I'd get the aluminum bike with carbon fork if you're planning to use it as is, in fact I did just that and have had no issues with comfort.

If you plan on upgrading the components at some point, go for the carbon frame.

Definitely go for the better frame if the price and value is good. Components don't last forever, plus you can replace them if/when needed. Frames last longer and have much more of an effect on the ride and your speed. The better frame might be the carbon composite frame, but not always. Go with the better and more aero frame design, and the frame that is designed with true triathlon geometry.

"Integra" is not a thing. Tiagra is the lower end component, Ultegra is a higher end component. If it's Tiagra, I'd go for the Merida. If it's Ultegra, I'd go with the Felt.

My reasoning is that nicer components can last longer, shift better, etc and will make you a happier rider with an entry level bike.

All other things being equal, I'd say get the Felt.  You can always upgrade the derailleurs fairly easily down the road if you wanted to.  Also, while 105 is most certianly better than Tiagra, Tiagra will work for you for the short (even long) term.

My opinion… Tiagra is not very nice. Hate working on it and it never stays in tune perfectly. Ultegra on the other hand you can get to shift perfect and it stays perfect for a long time.

I wouldn't buy a bike with Tiagra...

I wouldn't buy tiagra. 105 would be my lowest recommendation even if that means sacrificing a little in the frame. If you can afford it, I would try to get to entry level all carbon with 105. You won't be sorry making that investment.
