Myrtle Beach Marathon
30F / -1C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 52m 50s
Overall Rank = 524/2796
Age Group = F45-49
Age Group Rank = 24/225
Pre-race routine:

We drove down to Myrtle Beach on Friday, went to packet pickup and checked into the hotel. This was followed by the traditional pre-race pizza. I went to bed early after setting the alarm for 4:30.

I got dressed and ate breakfast (bagel with pb, banana, water with camelbak elixir), stretched, loitered in the lobby and had half a cup of coffee while my food digested a bit, made use of the hotel's flush toilets and headed out for a warm up run just after 5:30 -- aka the Dementor's Kiss 5k.
Event warmup:

I finished my warm up run in the start area. I had carried water with me and had a Gu and sipped on water while waiting for the port-o-pots. By then it was time to head to the corral and line up. National anthem, wheel chair start, and they are off...
Run
  • 1h 52m 50s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

I lined up between the 1:45 and 2:00 pace groups. Even though I lined up appropriately, it still took a few miles to settle down and find peeps running my pace. I grabbed water at 4, 6, 10 and had a gel just before the water station at 6. I was pleased to have ever so slight a negative split. There was great music near the airport. I think that it may have been the same band that was there the past two years.
Post race
Warm down:

Finish, medal, chocolate milk
Second Breakfast
Outlets, mocha

Event comments:

Next year this event is moving to the first weekend in March and the start/finish area is moving to the Myrtle Beach Sports Center which is currently under construction and will be located adjacent the convention center a little less than a mile away.

Great pics, awesome finish (24th AG) cool medal, and nice swag!  It's good to see your recovery from shoulder surgery has been going so well and you are back to your strong, fast self!  Congrats!

It was cold but not windy so not too bad really.  In fact, when I was doing my warm up the announcer said, "Good news!  We've officially made it up to 30 degrees!" The real issue is that the race starts so darn early.  It was very comfortable once we got some sun.

Running improves a lot when that's pretty much what you've got :-)

Very nicely done. It looks like the shoulder has pretty much forced a run focus, which you have benefitted with. Not that I am advocating injuring yourself as an improvement strategy, but wow, you sure made the best out of a cruddy situation.  Congrats on a race well done.

Sounds like a great race and you smashed it!

Even with corrals there is always some element of passing/being passed and settling in. Glad it worked out for you and YAY on the negative split!

What a great race!!  Super job!!  I agree with Chris, getting injured isn't the ideal improvement strategy, but you've certainly made lemonade from lemons.  Keep up the good work!  Now back to working on the biking and swimming...

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
