Subject: Two Pedal Systems or One
I just bought a new to me tri bike. It happened to come with Look pedals and I currently have Shimano pedals on my road bike. The Look pedals on the tri bike barely look used at all (the bike hardly looks used as well).

Any thoughts on whether I should keep the pedals and use different shoes and cleats for each bike or just get another set of pedals and make it simple to have the same system on both bikes?

Thanks.

Would you prefer to use a triathlon specific shoe on the tri bike and a road specific shoe on the road bike?

If not, I see no reason to use 2 different systems! :p

Even if I had separate tri/road bike shoes, I'd still have them cross compatible if for whatever reason I can't wear one shoe or the other, it won't limit which bike I could use.

As long as your cleats are set up so that your feet are in the same position on both bikes I don't see that it matters. I would prefer one type of pedal - I think it would be easier and wouldn't want to spend money on a second pair of shoes.

Thanks. That's what I'm thinking too. Probably cheaper to replace the pedals than to get a new pair of shoes/cleats

I run one pedal system on my Tri, Road, and Track bikes. Makes things consistent between the bikes and means if one set of shoes are wet I can just grab the other set. Same for my Cross and Mountain bikes, one system for them for the same reasons.

Or just switch one set of pedals between your bikes. Doesn't take more than a minute.

I've got Look Delta on my road bike and Look Keo on my tri bike, mainly because I wasn't paying close attention when I bought new pedals for my tri bike. I wear different shoes for tri and road anyway so it's never been an issue.

I have different pedal systems and different shoes on my road an mountain bikes for obvious reasons. I don't find it a pain at all.

Also, it may be more expensive initially to buy new shoes, but you will probably wear through 2 pairs of shoes sometime, so both pairs will last longer and the net result will be $0. It's a good justification for more bikes too.
