Subject: When is it time for new pedals or shoes?
What are the differences in higher-end pedals and entry-level pedals? What are the differences in manufactures/brands in all clipless pedals (e.g. feeling while pedaling, cleat differences, etc.)?

Aside from obvious wear and tear on shoes that would lead to new shoes, is there a suggested time to upgrade?

Definitely before your pedals look like this. Even with new cleats my foot would still move back and forward with every pedal stroke.]

In terms of the differences between low end and high end it is mainly small savings in weight. The cheaper end Look pedals weigh about 120g each whereas one that is five times the price with all its carbon fibre and titanium is 90g. Not something the average person is going to notice. I guess there may be a difference in build quality and durability, although I haven't noticed any differences since 'downgrading' to a much cheaper pedal.

I had a pair of Nashbar brand Look-Delta compatible pedals that lasted 8000 miles. The bearings got gritty, probably because I got caught in the rain a couple of times and could not clean out the bearings. I have never worn out a pair of cleats or shoes. I've cracked nylon cleats from over tightening. Using a cleat cover will reduce wear on cleats when walking around. Shoes, pedals, and cleats can last a long time if taken care of, even the bargain brand..

I'm still wearing my 2001 Specialized BG shoes, and have changed the cleats twice in that time. I have scads of sets of SPD and SPD compatible pedals, ranging from the cheaper M515 to the really cheap wellgo knock offs to more expensive ones. The only ones I've had to toss were the ones with the stripped threads, which happens sometimes. That's thousands and thousands and thousands of miles.

So, I guess in my world, the answer is...never? When you want to? When you're bored?

Road cyclists tend to have a higher cadence than triathletes. Why is this? Is it bad?

I got a new pair of the same size / brand of shoes and started running on them. On my left foot, the toe next to the big toe starts to get a little painful and goes numb after the first 1-3 miles.

Already a cyclist and not a bad swimmer, I figured all I had to do was build up to running a few miles and I’d be ready to go. The challenge invigorated me, and I ran out to buy new running shoes.

I started riding this spring with the Carnac shoes on Look pedals (with plenty of float). About five minutes into a ride I get sharp pain on the outer edge of my feet, just behind the pedal.
