Subject: Triathlon Training 20 Week Program
Hi I'm new to triathlons and my husband and I have applied to do the Noosa Triathlon in November.
We are currently into our 2nd month of training and have kept pretty much to the 20 week olympic 2x balanced training plan. We are not completely unfit and have been seeing great improvements already.
My question is this - What's the best course of action?
We had 10 months of training in total so in that time would repeating the 20 week plan be an idea do the full 20 weeks then start over up until race day or instead just repeat each 4 weeks of the 20 week plan until race day?
Would love to hear your thoughts.
thanks in advance.

If it is your first triathlon. I'd suggest maybe do a sprint or Olympic at the 20 week break. That would be an idea.

I agree with a race after the 20 weeks.  Will kind of show you were your training has gotten you and maybe help indicate where you should focus more for the remaining time up to the race.  I'm "coaching" a new athlete now and going with this approach.

If you can't do a race at 20 weeks, you can at least simulate one. That will give you a sense of where you are at, and where the challenge still lies. You can spend the last 20 weeks continuing to train, but also with a bit more focus on any limiters that you might have noticed.

Don't repeat the training plan. I am sure it builds up in intensity as your fitness is supposed to improve, so to start from scratch again would be too easy on the level you have reached after 20 weeks.

I would look for another plan, which is a bit tougher. I am sure you can find one for more advanced athletes, or you apply your own common sense and "improve" the 20 week plan that you already have to fit your current level when you start the second round.

Excellent thank you for your advice.
SImulating a race would be great and give me an idea of not only where I am at but also some idea of the transitions... I was beginning to wonder.
I am about to enter us into a super sprint for August so although that is still over 20 weeks away we can spend the final 12 weeks either finding another training plan as you suggested focussing on the limiters (for me this is running!).
Thanks again! Much appreciated.

THank you it's exactly what I wanted to know. I have 12 more weeks on this current plan and then will find something to up the ante to get me through to the big race in November. In the meantime I am about to sign my husband and I up for a super sprint in AUgust. WIll show us how far we really have come.
Thanks again for everyones suggestions and advice.

I'm doing the 22 week sprint tri program and the 2 mile bike ride it starts with is not very challenging. I see this as a opportunity to train the right way and challenge myself. Any ideas?

A quick and easy 20 minute at home strength training workout. This is a freeweight workout, so only a few dumbbells are needed.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

This Intermediate 20 week plan is a quick ramp up in overall volume, but with 20 weeks to train only, it is a gradual and safe approach because of the alternating weeks of the long run/bike.
