Subject: SPD Cleats question
Hi,

So I'm very new to triathlons and have only done 1 with my regular running shoes for the bike. Recently, I decided to get dual platform pedals (http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-PD-M324-Clipless-Clip-Pedals/dp/B001AT33CW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1424909836&sr=8-3&keywords=dual+cycling+pedals) and Pearl Izumi Tri Fly Cycling shoes...

So I didn't realize that the only combo that'll work with those pedals and shoes are SPD cleats (rookie mistake?). I do NOT plan to do a fly mount (I've only read about those and that frightens me). But will I be able to walk in the SPD cleats on those tri/road cycling shoes? I'm not sure if the ground will ruin the cleat or if it's dangerous to walk in during transition, because they stick out of the sole. Anyone else experience this or have any advice?

Thanks

You can buy cleat covers to walk the bike out of the transition area.
I use cleat covers at pit stops when I go on charity rides.

I think you might have a bit of an issue here. The shoes you have are triathlon shoes made for a road style 3 bolt cleat. The pedals use a 2 bolt mountain bike style cleat.

Road shoes/pedals are supposedly better for road use as it will reduce hot spots. Mountain bike style shoes are kind of nice because the cleat is typically surrounded buy the sole of the shoe so its much easier to walk around in. Personally I use road pedals on my tri bike and mountain bike pedals on my mountain bike. I also have 2 pairs of shoes.

Thanks for the replies. The tri shoes actually enable both 2-bolt or 3-bolt cleats, but because my pedals are 2-bolt, I have to use the SPD cleats. I'm just wondering if there's a safe way to walk in the shoes without having to do the fly mount. The cleat covers is an option. Or can I just walk in them? I don't think I want to buy another set up of pedals.

You can walk in them, just be aware that they might be slightly slippery.

Before I started to do the flying mount in races, I can in my Speedplays. Never slipped, but I also kept the pace accordingly.

In the 13 or so years I've had them, and tens of thousands of miles ridden, and countless number of races, I've manged to fall/trip/stumble/crash/otherwise embarrass myself in myriad ways...but not ever b/c of my spd cleats :-) (of course, NOW I've jinxed myself...) Yes, you can walk in them.

The correct cleat orientation and float for a rider is dependent on their individual foot, pedaling mechanics, and cleat position.

How do I know if my cleats need to be adjusted? And how do you know in which direction to adjust them? I have been having medial knee pain and edema but my LBS says the cleat placement is fine.

I think I have pes ansurine tendonitis. I have had tender to-the-touch pain on the medial aspect of both knees after riding. The pain is more acute the couple of days after a ride.

My problem is I can only swim about 30-40 meters without having to rest. What is the best way to improve this? I need to get from 40 to 750 meters in 6 months.

I have 10 lessons with a coach and he keeps telling my I'm holding my breath. I cannot figure out where since I'm breathing out and in every 3rd stroke. Any drill recommendations?
