Age Group Rank = 1/40
Pre-race routine:

Signed up last minute b/c I do not feel my fitness is coming around and I wanted a little test to see where I am at.
Woke up at 4:40am to get the wife on her way to work and then just drank coffee and a smoothie and putzed around till time to leave and go get a number.
Event warmup:

Ran 2mi increasing pace to around 6:20 for last half mile. Changed shoes and then did another half mile at 5:50 pace. 2 or 3 80yd strides and then got to the line

Comments:

Was very cold and windy so I actually chose to run in tights, long sleeves and gloves. Pins did not feel great on the warm up so I knew I had to try and go out easy.
Went out with 1 other guy who just tucked in behind me and did not budge for 4mi. Pretty smart move from him b/c there were some lengthy stretches into a 20mph wind. At 4mi he edged up on me and I figured I would drop back and tuck in. Problem was that he put in a strong surge and I was not able to up my pace to match. I ended up really struggling the last 2mi. Did not know my time but once the clock in the finish straight came into view I saw that I could sneak under 35 if I pushed. Upped the effort and got under.
What would you do differently?:

On the day not much. This was a test. I went out and felt controlled even if my legs did not feel great. Just sort of had nothing extra after 4mi. Only been back running since January (well anything that resembles training. Took a while to build back from zero). Not thrilled by the race but can't be to dissapointed.
Post race
Warm down:

3mi slow run

What limited your ability to perform faster:

age and being away from activity for to long

Event comments:

Good little race. Would be better if they could get the weather to play nice.

Nice strut! Too bad that other guy didn't budge for most of the race. Sounds like he made you do all the work!

Looks like you had an awesome race! 2OA with a sub 35 min race is strong! It validates your training over the past few months!

I'm really looking forward to seeing you strut it at TRM!

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had weight issues. I remember standing on the scale as a child weighing 60 pounds and feeling fat. My family dealt with stress by eating.
