I have been looking on the internet for a swim training program that specifically works on technique. So, it will tell you, so many kick intervals, so many pulls, swimming on side, etc. I would like it to be 3/week and around a 16 week plan. I can't find plans that are specific enough. I need lots of help with technique. Of course, I have never swam 1.2 miles before but I feel if I can improve my technique, I should be able to accomplish the distance

Any suggestions?

You will get more bang for your buck if you take a few lessons from a qualified instructor. You'll shorten the learning curve if you go the instructor route rather than ingraining bad habits from trying the do it yourself route.

With that being said, USMS.org, swimsmooth, The Race Club, and total immersion are all good places to get technique advice and videos.

You mean Half Ironman??? 1.2 miles is 1.9 km. Not a huge distance really.
The key is to start simple and break it down. Focus on repeat intervals of short duration 25 or 50. Your technique WILL breakdown if you just try to go as far as you can continuously. Swim training is different than running or cycling. Embrace the start stop nature of it.

BTW Marathon swims are 10k + & no one calls a 5k a half marathon.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
