I fear I may have achille tendonitis. Not really looking for medical advice here, as I will see a physician this week., but as the verdict will probably be no running, and maybe no riding and going to the pool is not easy I can't see myself going 5 times a week, what am I going to do to keep going?

I am afraid I will lose all motivation and all the progress I made, all the muscle I have build and turn into a fat blob (again). Rather depressing.....

Not a happy bunny today

Not sure how bad your AT problems is but when I was dealing with it a couple of years ago I could bike and swim. When I wasn't biking and swimming I kept my self busy by doing eccentric heel drops and foam rolling my calves.

Hopefully it's not too bad and I will be able to ride... I am planning an extra strength session a week (arms and core) but that's soooo boooooring

I a worried about losing motivation most of all, I feel quite down today and can't get my bum off the couch

Have you tried adding a heel lift. I battled with it for about for months before I decided to go to the doctor. He gave me 3/4 cut orthotic to put in my shoe and was able to continue running. The orthotic lifted my heel and took the pressure of my Achilles and I was back to running in no time.

I had a bad case of bi-lateral AT.  Doc prescribed PT which helped a ton.  After a couple sessions I was running again and when I questioned it was told that was part of the program I was on.  Doc said my AT's were in tact and strong so running was ok as long as I stuck to what PT said.  So there's hope for you!

This is 100% the wrong way to look at it. Injuries can be blessings in disguise. Don't think about what you can't do, think about what you can do. Use it as an opportunity to work on things you otherwise wouldn't and spend a lot of time doing things to promote healing in the injured area. You will learn that injuries are expensive - both from a money and time lost stand point. Stay positive.

I would try to water jog, swim with a pull buoy (if injury is so sever you have to avoid all pressure), pilates, something like an elliptical would probably keep you moving without the same amount of stress as running. All of course with permission from your doctor . Good luck, hope it is not as bad as you think!

I had two bouts of Achilles tendonitis my first year in. Made the rookie mistake of trying to ramp up my run too fast and paid for it.

My doctor had me doing a lot of stretching and rolling/massage of the tendon. I was ok in the pool but was told to watch the hard push off the wall. I was back on my bike in about two weeks and never looked back. He even admitted that the two weeks off the bike was conservative because for some reason he thinks I can over do things. No idea where he got that crazy idea.

Bottom line is this is not the end of the world. It just changes your focus for a few months. I actually saw great improvement in my overall fitness and good gains on my bike (riding 150-200 miles a week) while off running (which I hate anyway). I did my first tri having only run 4 days in four months.

Don't look at this as an excuse to loose fitness, look at it as an opportunity to make big strides in either swimming or cycling.

Good luck.

I had Patella Tendonitis while training for my Ironman last year. Doctor told me 10-14 days rest, no running or biking. I went to the pool 4x a week and swam but with a pull bouy because kicking still hurt my knee. I also worked on strength training and stretching/foam rolling. After 10 days I felt absolutely fine and on day 11, I completed the Challenge AC Full Aqua/Velo with no issues. Sometimes a little rest will do wonders and I wouldnt worry about losing too much progress, your fitness will still be there.

^^This. Start Deep Water Running to replace your runs. You'll maintain a lot of your run fitness. If you can't go to the pool five days a week, maybe you can do a swim work out and water running workout back to back.

Re-read what Thomas wrote, it's spot on. Don't lose motivation...Adjust, adapt, and overcome. Best of Luck!!!

Thanks for all the replies guys and gals. I couldn't get an appointment until next Monday so I am going to play it safe and not bike until then. Been to the pool today. Didn't think about running in the water but I swam , using mostly my arms. I am going to focus on strength and swim until Monday, then, we'll see what doc says.

Thanks again for the support, You are right, this is not a set back, it's an opportunity!

View this as an opportunity to gain excellence in the water! Increase the volume and intensity of your workouts; you will have more recovery time in between. Or, do more form work on top of the endurance work that you do. Of all 3 disciplines, the swim sessions, if done with enough intensity, will allow you go come back quicker with the other two once that you start with then again. Big lungs mean a lot when you get back to the run!

Just wanted to tell you I feel your pain...Labral tear in hip and ongoing pain since October. So I picked up swimming...and I think might possibly have a labral tear in my shoulder! I've already had one, so I know what it feels like.

In any case, the last time I had shoulder surgery, running in the water was my saving grace. If the doc confirms my fear, thats what I"ll be doing. There is a great program I have followed in the past.  It didn't help me when I returned to running, but it certainly gave me something to do!

Thanks for your kind words. I hope your shoulder will be alright. Thanks for the link too. Sound like the ideal workout but it doesn't seem feasable unless you have the pool to yourself.
Managed a short bike ride yesterday, the leg seemed ok but I was back to slooooooooow. Seems that the little progress I had made ont he bike is all gone already.

When I tore my AT a few years ago, I could bike and swim, but I couldn't run. I also had a PT who ran, and he understood that my goal was to be 100% again. No matter what, do NOT push it. I had setbacks because I got impatient and tried to push it. Those darn things take forever to heal.

+1000

This is NOT a recovery you can push. All you will do is delay the healing process. It can be frustrating but let it heal and work on the other two sports.

I hear you, I am being careful, even if I had some good news at the doc yesterday and it's not as bad as I thought. it's not tendinitis (it might have developped into it if I had carried on) and should be ok in a week or so. He taped me up nicely and gave me some soles to put in my shoes to relieve the tension and I can already feel an improvement. Yeah!
I have decided to DNS the 10k I had signed up for on Friday though. I am disappointed but I'd rather not compromise the first of my only 2 tris this season in just over 4 weeks.
