Subject: Helmet weight - neck/Shoulder pain.
I got a TT bike about a month ago and I have been riding it hard. I got fitted on this bike, so I don't think fit is the issue.

I have been experiencing neck and shoulder pain since switching from a road bike. Especially on rides of 2 hrs or more duration. Is this normal or will "I just get used to it..." as with other bike pains I have experienced in the past?

I have a lower-end giro helmet, that weighs 290 g ... would a lighter helmet make a difference? Is this common?

Thanks!

You're holding your head in a new & different positon than on your road bike, so it's not unusual for your neck muscles to be sore until they get used to the new position.   Helmet weigjht probably has nothing to do with it unless you've got a bowling ball strapped to it.

If it doesn't get better soon, then you might want to go back to your fitter (with your bike and helmet) to see if anything might need to be tweaked.

Go on a 2 hour ride without the helmet and report back.

We are taking about a bicycle helmet, right?

Ok I will try a longer ride w/o my bike helmet - I didn't even think of that. I don't think I have ridden w/o a helmet since I was a college student. Funny how the thought of riding w/o a helmet now kind of spooks me a bit. Not that I have needed it yet

That's a bad ideal and a very irresponsible piece of advice.  Please don't do it.

Agreed. Don't do that. So far it still sounds like getting used to the aero position.

There are a few things I pay up for, a light comfortable helmet is one of them. The new position and bike probably comes into play as well, but if you bought the low end heavier helmet, that can be the source of the issue as well. If your spending a lot of time in the bars, don't crane up your head, get used to only seeing a limited distance in front of you.

I assumed it was sarcasm.

If you're going to do it, ONLY do it on the trainer, and make sure you're looking up at a screen as you would a road.

I pretty well guarantee it's the position, as the weight of a helmet is pretty small compared to your head itself.

Good luck.

I would agree with what others have said and it is almost certainly that you are in new position and it will take some time to adapt to it.  It might mean you have to shorten your rides on your TT bike and build up as your muscles adapt.

It's the new position and not the helmet.  You need to get used to the aero position.  It will take a few rides.

Focus on how you are holding your shoulders during the ride.  They need to be relaxed, which can be difficult when adapting to a new riding position.  If you are riding with tense shoulders, you'll feel it later in the ride.

Ok Thanks for all the re-direct fire on the topic of riding w/o a helmet. I won't do it. To be honest I was concerned.

I will just keep on trying to get used to the aero position, and try to relax my shoulders.

It took me about a season of serious riding several years age for my 'rear-end' to get used to the saddle soreness of lots of cycling - but it eventually went away and is no longer a problem ... maybe this is similar.

If it persists I will look into a lighter, high end helmet configured for the aero position.

I went in for a fitting because I had been having chronic stabbing pain in my shoulder/neck whenever I ride for more than 30 minutes. I'm planning a half Ironman this summer, any help for this?

I've had shoulder problems since the very beginning of tri training. I did see an ortho who took x-rays and said I have a type II acromioin. I'd love to know some stretches to help my flexibility.
