When I did my HIM last year, I found that I was sighting every 3-4 strokes. If I didn't I would end up going sideways into a buoy or person!

How often do most of you sight per stroke?

*Update: sorry. I tried that poll function, but hit enter after 2nd entry and it saved the poll without any more entries and I can't edit!

It really depends on the situation.  I've done races where what I could see to the side when I breathe and the other swimmers around me was enough to stay on track with only the occasional peek forward.  Other times it's every 3-4 strokes like you describe.

I breathe every 4th stroke and sight every 4th breath. On the stroke before the breath I'll poke my head up just enough so my eyes are above the surface and I'm not torqueing my neck, and then breathe on the next stroke. Works for me.

For me it depends on the water conditions and amount of traffic around me.  When I sight I am looking to stay on course and I am looking to avoid contact if someone is veering into my path.  I sight more if people are around me and less if I have open water.  I sight more if the water is rough or there is a current.  In calm water with little traffic I do not sight often.  Maybe every ten strokes.  I swim a lot in open water during the summer and work hard on swimming straight.  The straighter you swim all other things equal the less you have to sight.

Stroke after stroke, my pace was pulling me out into the middle of the lake quickly. The cover seemed to be getting thicker. But still in the distance, the little boathouse was my lighthouse.

Some are getting a little OWS practice in, others are strategizing, the rest are just plain scared.
