Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, since I'm the same person who suffered a tree branch vs. ponytail injury a few years ago.

I had a really good bike ride Saturday and made an effort to really keep up the speed and cadence, and to not let the hills defeat me! I found myself clenching my jaw a few times as I got to the top of the hills, but didn't think anything of it, until...

I got home and after showering and relaxing, I could barely open my mouth to eat. (Of course my husband found me having to keep my mouth shut hilarious.) This was already my third outdoor ride of the year, so I know it wasn't a question of a poor fit or a too-heavy helmet. Nope, just me clenching my muscles a bit too hard as I dug deep.

I went back to my logs and found that it was my fastest mph average I've ever ridden at that park, so was it worth it? Of course! And I'm pretty much back to normal by now anyway.

I'm a dental hygienist. You have a strain that will subside with proper care...or will get worse if you try to power through it.

Switch to a soft food diet for 5-7 days (protein smoothie, pasta, oatmeal etc).

Alternate warm moist heat and ice applied to your jawline 20 mins on 20 mins off then switch. (Get a hand towel wet and microwave it for a couple mins)

Use NSAIDs like Ibuprofen 2-3x per day if you're allowed to take those.

If this is a recurrent issue for you, you may want to wear a customized night guard while you ride. They can be worn anytime of day despite their name. (Real name is an orthotic splint)

* this does not replace customized medical or dental advice. Especially since I have not evaluated you in person. Please seek professional care if symptoms worsen or don't subside after 7-10 days.

Thank you for your concern! It was seriously just a tension thing and I was fine by the next day (to my husband's disappointment, haha). =)

This is a fairly common bike injury (strained neck and/or back).

Hope you feel better soon. Talking of dumb injuries, I pulled a muscle in my arm while running once and another time I hurt my shoulder putting a compression top on before a game of golf...

I am in the market for a new road bike, at several local bike stores I will test ride several bikes. Other than basic fit and components, how should I compare them while doing a test ride?

This injury commonly occurs during what is called the recovery phase and/or the take-off phase of running. Hamstring strains range from mild, grade I, to a more severe, grade III.

I read an article that this type of pain comes from straining the neck, especially from riding a road bike. What can you tell me about this type of injury?
