The Woodlands, Texas
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
88F / 31C
Sunny
Total Time = 13h 13m 35s
Overall Rank = 975/2700
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 124/300
Pre-race routine:

powerbar 3:30 am, GU 10 min before race.
Event warmup:

walk a 1.5-2 miles from car to t1-swim start
Swim
  • 1h 33m 45s
  • 4200 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

very combative swim, especially the last half mile or so where everyone was funneled into a 20 foot wide channel
What would you do differently?:

Need swim coach
Transition 1
  • 08m 16s
Comments:

Ok so Transition was 6 inches deep in mud.... needed to carry bike and shoes then wash off feet with water at far end. Also went to bathroom. Transition sucked.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing much to be done for it with all that mud. I will be washing gear for days.
Bike
  • 6h 49m 42s
  • 112 miles
  • 16.40 mile/hr
Comments:

14-16 oz water per 10 miles (aid station). Kept wet all day.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get my knee better, need to figure out how to ride faster. Heat was a factor.
Transition 2
  • 08m 12s
Comments:

Transition was still 6 inch deep in mud, decided to run in bike shoes so feet would be clean for the run. Also hit bathroom.
What would you do differently?:

Make quicker decision to run in mud with shoes.
Run
  • 00m
  • 26.2 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

Drank 3 oz of water per mile, 2 glasses of water on clothes, 2 cups of ice down shirt to keep cool. Was fine for first lap then the heat just got to me and I slowed down steadily to a slow pace for last run.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk a couple miles to get all my gear.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

BIke was affected by right knee, run affected by heat and humidity.

Event comments:

There is a lot of distance between the registration, transition, swim start, finish line, transition gear bag. Count on doing an extra 2-3 miles of walking on race day. You really need to keep fluids up and keep cool with lots of ice. I used 60 cups of ice down my shirt on the run. It would be very easy to get heat exhaustion if you get behind. The humidity really adds to the heat index. With it being early in the year most folks did not have a chance to train in the heat. We had snow 2 weeks before the race. It was a hard race, but for my fitness and condition of my knee muscle it was a soiid effort on my part, especially to not walk on the last lap.

Thanks. Need to get that little knee muscle healthy. It is hard to say how much the heat impacts ya on race day. With winter training I was on the trainer for 95% of my miles, so that probably didn't help.

My race report is different. My motivating factors go back seven years. I have lived in denial for seven years. Depression. I registered for Ironman Texas even though I felt like a complete failure.

Often it makes sense to race slower in order to finish faster and at the same time have a more enjoyable Ironman Triathlon experience.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

I never imagined that 350 yards broken down into 7 REALLY long lanes would be so big! I gasped out loud and told Grady that maybe I had underestimated the swim.
