Subject: Struggling with a scissor kick during crawl stroke?
I have been struggling with this terrible scissor kick while I swim. I ran across this video and I had it corrected before I left the pool this morning. Thought this might be helpful to someone if they are struggling with the dreaded scissor kick like me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrqMTSm1bdU&feature=g-u&context=G295...

Great video. I often use the drill of kicking in streamline for at least half a length and then adding a few strokes...It doesn't just help me with kicking, it also helps me with correct body position (getting my butt and legs up).

What also can help is to try and touch your toes during the kick, to where they sort of brush against each other. If you can feel your feet touch during the kick, you know you're not scissoring.

Most scissors kicking is a response to instability, due to over rotation, overreaching, crossing over, b reathign late, breathing early, etc.

Is your scissor kick gone even without the fins? Were you able to identify what caused it?

Yes it was completely gone without fins. It was amazing how well my body position felt in the water. I stayed on top of the water and no more snaking feeling with the scissor kick. I actually felt like I was straight as an arrow going through the water. I was stopping my flutter kick when I was breathing and using a scissor kick.

Although I do plan on doing the drill in the video in every warm up for awhile to make sure I ingrain a proper kick in my swim.

This

Freestyle is my son's (age 11) worst stroke. His root cause his right arm crossing over. That causes him to compensate with his left arm, which causes his hip to go out and he the scissor kick to get alligned. He has been swimming since he was 7 in rec leagues, last year was his first year club. Watching it would drive Most of the coach would point it out (both the cross over and scissor) but it was relatively recent that a coach actually say there and identified the actual cycle of the breakdown. He has worked really hard over the last 3 months relearning free. But he can focus on the right arm.
