Total Time = 1h 08m 20s
Overall Rank = 70/402
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 9/44
Pre-race routine:

Got there very early to get a parking spot.
Event warmup:

Very short run, very short bike, unfortunately no swim.
Swim
  • 13m
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Didn't go with the elite wave, so I figured I would be near the front of the pack and I was right. Battled back and forth with one other guy for the pack lead the entire time, came out just behind him, partially due to navigation, partially due to being just a little fatigued from Sunday's race still.

Garmin shows my stroke rate is averaging 28 spm (x2 = 56spm), which is a little too low. This might be a part of why I'm not as fast as I think I should be right now.
What would you do differently?:

Work on my stroke rate for the future, but nothing really different specifically for this race.
Transition 1
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

I probably wouldn't have lost any speed if I ran the bike all the way to the sidewalk as it was hard to get moving on the wet grass once I got on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing besides maybe run the bike a little farther.

Bike
  • 28m 31s
  • 0 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Disappointing. Couldn't catch my breath at first, and legs didn't have it. Should've been a minute or more faster.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder.
Transition 2
  • 00m 31s
Comments:

Nailed this
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 25m 21s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Brutal. I struggled as soon as I turned out on to the road and started up the hill. Couldn't catch my breath and legs felt heavy. Managed to improve each mile, but that is somewhat due to the setup of the course. The last mile is mostly downhill.
What would you do differently?:

Have more talent?
Post race
Warm down:

Just hung out with friends until I could depart.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of talent. Still a bit fatigued from Sunday's race.

Event comments:

Very nice race, well organized, attracts very tough competition.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
