i'm training for my first ultra (50 miles). it is in the end of October. My training program has me running 35-55 miles/week. i'd like to still bike and swim, but i don't want to compromise my running training. thoughts?

Lots of triathletes run 6-7 days per week, and also get in swim and bikes doing a couple of workouts per day. If you throw in 2 a day workouts, just make sure your swim or bike never compromise your next workout. Dial in on nutrition and post recovery.

a good way to do it is add your bikes and swims to the end of run workouts. You are preparing for a 9+ hour race after all

It really depends on how well you handle the load.

Once I hit about 40mpw running, I only really wanted to bike 1x per week. I could have swam more (my strongest tri event) but I simply didn't have the time.

Keep your running as priority #1. For the final ~8weeks of my marathon training, I dropped biking entirely because I was really struggling hitting my run workouts after even a moderate bike session.

You might fare better than I did as mileage creeps up Just maintain your focus on your 50miler goal and you'll be fine. Good luck!

Should be easy to accomplish this, if you've got the right mind-set and time available for training. Most ultra training plans focus on high volume but low intensity runs. I'm a MOP ultra runner, but I really enjoy my weekend group rides. I can usually get in about 100-mpw on the bike while following my ultra plans (which typically involve 8 to 12 hours per week of low intensity running).

If your goal for the 50 is sub-9, things might be different......but I think this is very doable if you're thinking 9+. It's a question of participation vs racing. I definitely participate when it comes to ultras.
