Hi Californians I'll be visiting San Francisco July 8th, then road tripping up 101 to Seattle over the following few days. I'm training for a 3 and 5 mile OWS back in Minnesota so I'd like to keep up my training on the road. Can you recommend some good lakes to swim in along 101? I'm really tempted to swim in the San Francisco bay but I won't have my wet suite and I'm concerned I would get swept out into the ocean or eaten by a shark. With that said, I'll be near Aquatic Park and I hear it's OK for swimming. Is it safe to swim back and forth a few hundred yards in the cove there to get a work out? Would I freeze without a wet suite, be swept into the ocean, or eaten by marine life?

Thanks in advance!

The only place I'm sure you could swim along your route is about 2 hours from San Francisco airport north along 101 near Santa Rosa. Not far north of that you can take River Road out to Guernville (maybe 30 minutes off of 101). In Guernville is Johnson's Beach where they set up a dam in the Russian River for swimming. That is the swim site for the Vineman 70.3 race coming up on July 12th.

About another hour's drive north of Santa Rosa is Lake Mendocino which might be a good option if the water levels are good.

Way up in Redcrest (another 3 hours north of Santa Rosa) along the Avenue of the Giants you might find another spot for swimming in the Eel River.

Good luck, and have a safe trip.

Aquatic Park is fine, you'll get bored as it's not that big, but I wouldn't venture out past the opening without a local or knowing the tides....   You'll be cold without a wetsuit but you won't be the only one.

I started riding this spring with the Carnac shoes on Look pedals (with plenty of float). About five minutes into a ride I get sharp pain on the outer edge of my feet, just behind the pedal.
