Great article Mike, I really enjoyed it. And CONGRATS on the first win! Haha!

Funny how sometimes we need something to shake us up a little to get us out of our regular routines and help us gain some new perspective and motivation.

Cool story Mike...couldn't have happen to a nicer guy. You helped me a lot last year before my second IM race and glad to see you had a good day.

Great story, really enjoyed reading it. Its like that; most often when i feel im having a bad day, is when i run my fastest. And vice versa

You didn't quit, you just took a break.

I don't know the course so I don't know how you did compared to your in shape self......but you damn sure crushed T1 !!

Congratulations on beating back those demons.

Good read! A story I needed to hear after 2 weeks of bad training and way slower than normal paces across the board (life...stress...laziness). Honestly thought about skipping my IM for this year but hopefully this is the kick in the butt I need keep pushing.

well, they often say that winning a race is often all about who shows up. And this past weekend it sounds like you did. Way to go Mike, that is one very well deserved victory - thanks for the great write-up. And extra bonus points for the newspaper story - very cool indeed!

Great read and as always a great message. I'm happy you still have that fire in your belly! You are such an amazing mentor and coach...I'm sure on some level your athletes tap some of your energy/desire/hunger for racing. I'm REALLY happy you had enough left to kick butt and win it all!!!! Onward to 2016!!!!

I'm a paratriathlete, missing my right leg below the knee. This is my first season of Tri and have completed 8 so far. Feeling burnt out, I decided the last race of the season was for me - not my coaches, not my competition, not my training mates. Held in a town I'd grown up in, and wanting to test if I actually enjoyed Tri I surprisingly PR'd with a longer course than previously. I'm amazed at how positive self-talk and letting go propelled me further than the 'not good enough' attitude of my coaches. Thank you for sharing your experience as it adds credence to my change in performance as well.

I found your blog through training plans provided on this site since I'm moving into off season mode. Thank you so much for providing training and motivational guidance to those of us starting out

To do this with part of a missing limb is very inspirational. I know you probably don't want to be somebody's inspiration, but you are. I get disgusted with athletes a lot when they moan that they came in second, or they are slower than last year. For the back-of-the-packers, it can all be too much hidden self-congratulations. But your post is awesome!!! Keep going!!

Awesome post, thanks. I coached a paratriathlete this year - an ITU gal - very competitive and I can see you're the same way. You're an inspiration so don't thank me! Thank you!

I liked your first post, how could you edited it? The intention of my post wasn't to say anything but 'hey, when the chips are down, don't give in' - that's all. I'm sorry you feel like the post was worthless. I was just trying to share a story of coming back from injury and having a good day when I wasn't expecting it. I hope everyone gets to experience that, no matter what level they are racing at.

Have a great week! Mike

yeah- sorry.  I appreciate your response.

For those that did not see my very short lived original post, it chided Mike's story a bit, in that even tho' he didn't train, he still won, and it was winning that motivated him to stick with the sport.  Most of us don't have that same experience; even when we train our hearts outs with passion, we're still MOP.

But- I deleted it, as Mike seems like a generally terrific guy, and I didn't feel that BT was the place for the negative/snarky responses that are so prevalent over on Slowtwitch.  Everyone's journey and experience is different, and you've, I'm sure, had your challenges- which I respect.  You were just sharing your experience and what it did for you.  We each have to find our own motivation.  So, I deleted my original post as having little redeeming qualities.

Enjoy your life journey.  Me- I'm focused on the NY Marathon in 4 weeks.  Can't wait!
