Total Time = 6h 14m 18s
Overall Rank = 131/260
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Normal routine.
Swim
  • 37m 45s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

poor sighting for first loop and got better on the second loop
What would you do differently?:

more open water swim before the race and practice more sighting
Transition 1
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

Chip timing band broke so add about 20-30 seconds to my time
What would you do differently?:

I should of bought the neoprene timing band instead of using the plastic one provided. Broke once before the race and when I took I wetsuit off.
Bike
  • 2h 58m 54s
  • 58 miles
  • 19.45 mile/hr
Comments:

bike course was harder uphill than I expected but looking back I can understand more due to the elevation. Had it been elevation i trained in, it would have been better
What would you do differently?:

drank more sooner and figure out better way to take in my food and enduralytes instead of using little sandwich bags to store stuff in.
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Good transition for me
What would you do differently?:

I wish my feet were tougher but I have to run with my shoes on. I wouldn't really change much with my transition other than perhaps leaving my helmet unstrapped but on my head
Run
  • 2h 33m 23s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

thought there was an aid station each mile as said during race briefing but turned out to not be the case. I overheated about 2 miles in and couldn't really recover.
What would you do differently?:

start a little slower and make sure that I have enough enduralytes in my system as I cramped in my legs some. At the first aid station I should have stopped and gotten cooled down more by taking more ice and also dumping more water over my head. Also in hot humid race like this one, have a small towel in T2 to use and wrap ice in as my hat doesn't keep the ice in very well. Also perhaps have a couple of small sponges to put on femoral arteries.
Post race
Warm down:

went to medical tent to cool down for about 45 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

poor decision on my part to not adapt to the run course aid stations and the heat. I also think I might not of taken in enough calories early enough on the bike and I was trying to catch up too late which never really works.

Event comments:

I would like to do this race again in the future to redeem myself on the run. The heat played a big factor for me and I wasn't as precise with my food as I should of been. I enjoyed the event and recommend it to others. The race director saw me two days later and asked what I thought of it. It is nice to see the race director really cares and wants to hear feedback and does so by approaching people directly. Also the finishers medal is the best I've got. Portland 2013, IM CDA 2013, 70.3 Lake Stevens 2012, 70.3 Boise 2012. Very nice medal.

When the air horn went off, I did my best to simulate laps in the pool, but that dang panic came over me again, causing me to breaststroke until I could calm my breathing.
