FIRM Racing

Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 16m 55s
Overall Rank = 9/56
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 1/3
Pre-race routine:

Checked in, scoped out the venue, and headed into transition area. Took my time setting up then put on my wetsuit. Went down to the water to watch the start of the Olympic race and chatted with a few other athletes.about 10 minutes before the start of the sprint I pulled up my wetsuit and swam a little bit just to get wet. Loosened up and headed to the start area.
Event warmup:

Not much, a quick swim and some dynamic shoulder stretching.
Swim
  • 17m 15s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was pretty clear that I haven't been swimming much lately. I hit a point where I felt pretty gassed, but I pushed through it and actually felt good for most of the swim. Unfortunately my sighting was all over the place and I wasted a lot of time zig-zagging. Definitely something to work on. Overall not very happy with the time.
What would you do differently?:

Practice sighting and navigation, swim more.
Transition 1
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

A little slower than I'd like as I still struggle to get my wetsuit off while jogging.
Bike
  • 36m 34s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.69 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall the bike felt pretty good. I was able to stay aero pretty much the whole ride except for some sharp turns, which is a big improvement. I felt like I was riding hard and was a little surprised to have averaged under 20mph.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder. Also time to start thinking about more aero advantages (helmet, wheels, etc.)
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Wasted a few seconds here and there. All but one of the 8 who finished ahead of me were well under a minute in T2, so I have some work to do. I ate a couple Gu chomps which probably helped me on the run but might have wasted too much time in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Take nutrition with me and eat it while running.
Run
  • 20m 21s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Run felt great. No calf cramps. I felt strong from the start and felt like I conserved energy well during the bike to allow for a good run.
What would you do differently?:

GPS watch couldn't find a signal so I never knew my exact pace. I might have been able to push a little harder had I known.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim sighting, transition times.

Event comments:

Overall a really fun race. Well organized for a small local race, as most FIRM races are. There was a timing error with my T1 time (the initial results showed my T1 time at 8:44) which they fixed right away when I brought it to RD's attention.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
