Originally posted by 3mar I hear the "knee" one a lot. So when someone says, "I'd love to do an ironman, but I have a bum knee(s)" my response is, "there are quite a few people who have done it without any knees"

Hey....I have bad knees.....and the only time I try to run fast is when someone tells me they do IM's.

I may have to rethink my excuse for not doing IM (that I could not finish it without a pizza delivery on the bike leg) after reading in someone's race report that they put some pizza in special needs, and ate it (and finished without incident).

Now as for the part that the pizza has to be served (ref video link below) by one of the following tri hotties who would also escort me to provide motivation on the bike leg (so I could view/chase their butts the whole time)--Andreas Raelert, Sebastian Kienle, or Pete Jacobs--I think that's less likely to happen, so my excuse is still valid.

Of course my real excuse is that, knees, pizza, or no, I'm just too lazy and don't like biking that much. OTOH, if one of the above dudes wants to escort me, I could probably summon the desire from somewhere.

It does't bother me much, I usually try to encourage them or make their excuse seem lame.  Just last week i said to someone,  "you can do it if you wanted to, it just takes the desire and training.  Stop letting your mind stand your way.  There are amazing people racing triathlon.  Last weekend a woman raced a Half-Ironman with me who is an amputee.  Check out team Hoyt, the man pulls his son in a boat, rides a special bike and then pushes him on the run.  They race Ironman.  Not to mention my nephew ran his first half marathon 4 weeks before his 5th birthday"  She said "wow, that's so poignant!  You're right I have to get out of my own way!"

The reactions I tend to get, being on the heavier end of the scale, are not excuses as to why they can't do it, but amazement that I can, and do. As of this morning, I am 5'9" and 250.0lb... not a little guy a-tall
