The one that was reported from here (MN) a while back turned out to not be due to an amoeba. It was a skateboarding injury that caused an infection by his spine.

Don't tell my wife.......... she'll start throwing away my tri-gear.... She was worried about me swimming in a local lake because someone at work told her they heard that there was an alligator in there...... Were in Dallas.... not exactly alligator country. If she got wind of amoeba's in the lake, she'd really worried.

I had major surgery after learning to sail (including capsize drills) in the Thames River (the one in CT in the US). A lovely little bacteria called Pseudomonas Stutzeri decided that my intestines were a lovely place to live.

Things like this are certainly rare, but they happen! I ignored the onset of symptoms, but the really high fever was my red flag to go right to the Dr, who sent me to the ER.

Super creepy. It is very rare even here in Miami where are lakes get very warm every summer. But I do try to avoid swimming in lakes once the water temp is in the 80's just in case.

Holy cripes are you serious?

These things are indeed rare but so scary. I had a little bit of a scare when I went swimming in a cave in Hawaii and then pretty much immediately started up with flu symptoms. I had been reading about leptospirosis and how you can get it from tropical fresh water, and the serious cases can be really really bad. After visiting the ER it turns out I was just coincidentally sick from normal germs at the same time.

The three disciplines of triathlon are steeped in rhythm. Think of watching a well-trained swimmer, gliding smoothly down the lane, arms moving like clockwork, breathing every third stoke.
