Kelowna Apple Triathlon
12C / 54F
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 06m 1s
Overall Rank = 31/60
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 7/8
Pre-race routine:

Brought my own oatmeal, bought bananas and blueberries. Only had a sip of coffee which was not enough, I had a bad caffeine headache all day. Did not sleep well due to nerves and felt pretty exhausted and crappy waiting for the swim. Got there too early, it was cold, didn't want to take off my stuff too early. But I'm not a quitter! Sipped on Tailwind, had a bar before the swim.
Event warmup:

None, basically froze my ass off waiting for the swim. I was pretty much hypothermic before the swim start.
Swim
  • 10m 33s
  • 300 meters
  • 03m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

Was not prepared for trying to get around people, if I could have just swam it would have been much better. Lots of water swallowing, nerves and standing just to get my bearings.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, but I sure as hell better practice if I ever decide to do the Sprint!
Transition 1
  • 03m 39s
Comments:

I was SO cold I could barely feel my feet. Took ages to get my bike shoes on as I'd forgotten to loosen the straps.
What would you do differently?:

Loosen the straps, bring a toque!
Bike
  • 35m 5s
  • 15 kms
  • 25.65 km/hr
Comments:

Felt pretty cold on the bike for just about the entire ride, was shaking so hard but just kept going. Starting warming up as the sun got hotter. Rode in the big ring, not sure if that was the right move. Focused on staying safe in the turns as my judgement wasn't the greatest being so frickin cold!
What would you do differently?:

Wear more clothes.
Transition 2
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

Was still cold, feet were frozen so hard to get shoes on. Transition was way faster.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it was about as good as I could expect
Run
  • 14m 53s
  • 3 kms
  • 04m 58s  min/km
Comments:

My feet were balls of ice by the time I put my runners on, it took nearly the whole race to warm up. Did pretty good despite my trashed quads, I was pretty low on energy too but stayed positive and passed a lot of people in the run.
What would you do differently?:

Fuel differently, possibly drink more water.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked, stretched, got my dry bag and had my Vega recovery drink and a PBJ.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of conditioning, being COLD

Event comments:

Loved the experience, as it was my first lake swim. I know what I have to work on, and may or may not be ready for an open water sprint tri next year...if not it would be great to come back and improve my performance on the short tri.

Congratulations Julie.  A well done first race.  I had to laugh at your restless sleep.  The Apple Sprint was my first event in 2012 and I've done quite a few since but I still can't sleep the night before and I'm very stressed out until the race starts then I get to work and feel fine.  Just something about the anticipation.

I think you'll find the sprint swim much more to your liking.  With a 750m swim you have more time to spread out so there is less hassle with other swimmers.  You should look at Cultus lake Sprint this Sept 13th.  It might be too soon for you but it could be a nice race for next year.  It's a very nice race to end the season with and lots of newbies race every year.  I may register for the Olympic this September.  I haven't decided yet.

Your bike and run look great so you can only get faster.  Just keep it fun.

Congrats!

Are you a BC Local?

There is the Cherry Blossom Sprint triathlon early next year which has a pool swim with staggered starts for each swimmer, I thought it was fantastic!

My right knee has a pain in the front, just below the kneecap. I walked 24 miles of IM Louisville. No pain while walking but it started immediately when trying to run.

So here I was, a hard-working, respectable, just-turned-forty-six-year-old, who never considered herself athletic, lining up in my swim cap and goggles for my first triathlon.

It’s a challenge to push yourself a little harder and a little further. Be proud of every workout that is accomplished and every step-even the baby ones-that you take on this course to the finishline.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
