I'm doing IMOO in a few weeks and was planning on running a 53/39 with a 11/28 cassette. I'm not at all concerned about having enough gear going down hills, I just want to have to mash up the hills. I'm a pretty good climber though. Wondering what other people have used.

Hoping for 6 hours, but will probably be closer to 6:15.

I would seriously consider a 50/36 or 50/34 in that case.

With an 11-25 or a 12-28? I did Silverman 70.3 last year on my 53/39 an 12-28. I did OK on the hills but I was COOKED afterwards. That has about 4400 ft of climbing, with a big net elevation gain.

if you go with a compact (50/34 or 50/36) i would go with a 11-28 cassette. It allows you to ride in the lower range of the cassette leaving you with more easy gears for the climbs. I ran a compact with 11-28 last year had a good bike with a decent marathon afterwards.

53/39 is just too much gear for most age groupers. Without any cadence info, I'd probably lean toward the 12-28 however the it is much more important to have an easy enough gear for climbing as opposed to worrying about spinning out on the descents.

I was faced with same problem, you can see my post a few threads back. I ended up going to a compact setup, which I tested it out today. I am very glad that I did. The course I did has a similar elevation profile as IMWI. I was able to have better cadence going up the hills and my legs didn't feel as worn out. I was going about 60-70 rpm with my old setup, now I am going 70-80 and definitely feels much better.
My power output was much smoother. My VI the previous week on the same course was 1.10 and I was actively trying to keep my power as consistent as possible. Today my VI was 1.08 without trying (I was more focused on trying to get use to the new gearing). I was also able to hit just over 35 mph and didn't spinout. It's only been one ride, but I doubt I'll miss the 52 up in front.

If you do decide to switch, do it asap so that you can get use to the different gearing ratios.

I did decide to go with a compact. 50-34 with an 11-28 on the back. It will get put on this weekend, so I can do a few short rides on it before we head out for Wisconsin on Thursday. I think it will be a smart decision.

Is gear overlap from the big to small ring a consideration? Will the ratio increment of the compact setup be very beneficial to my riding?
